A free calorie, weight, and activity diary with an extensive food database and barcode scanning — for people who want to track nutrition without paying for a subscription.
What users love
The free tier covers nearly everything without a subscription
Food diary, weight, macros, and barcode scanning are all free — competitors lock these behind a paywall
This is the only free app I've found that allows users to track daily calorie intake, weight loss progress, and physical activities without requiring a subscription. All the other apps I've tried required a paid subscription after completing the initial questionnaire. You can also customize your own recepies.
The free version is pretty good if like me you just want to log your food as an aid to weight loss.
I'm enjoying the free version. I wish it had an exercise list, but the food diary is good.
Free barcode scanning meaningfully speeds up logging
Scanning a barcode auto-fills nutritional data and isn't hidden behind a paid tier
This is an excellent app for calorie tracking, exercise records and weight management. The free version has been a great tool, so I imagine the Premium would have extra features that many people would find helpful. Of course the results come as a product of maintaining self discipline in eating and exercise, but the app is a helpful way to focus on progress in these areas. Nutrition values for mos
I tried 4 or more apps before finding FATSECRET. None compared to what they offer. They teach in such an easy to learn way that comes naturally thru use of app i hesitate to give a 5. There are often times I scan the barcode, and it comes up the wrong flavor or wrong nutrition info. I don't think it's the developers fault, I think it's updated by users. So I rated a 5 because the app itself deserv
Better than the "top" calorie counting app after its latest "updates." I've moved on from MFP after years of use. No ads except for small "save with premium" buttons - no pop-ups! Barcode scanning included in the free version. No bait & switch with a "free trial." Expand all meals to see what's logged for the entire day, which you can no longer do with MFP. At first, navigating the app was a littl
Massive food database with local brands from multiple countries
Even niche snacks and regional brands show up — South Africa, India, Australia, New Zealand
has so many foods in its memory which makes it so easy to track what I eat.

has most nz foods and easier than samsung health remembers stuuf u ate
Macro and nutrient summary shows the breakdown of your diet
Daily and weekly breakdowns by protein, fat, carbs, and sugar make it easy to spot where you're going over
Really enjoying the features of this app. One thing I wished it had was the ability to import a recipe from online with the attached calories and nutrient info.
I have been logging in this app for a few weeks now. I tried it after getting back on an app that I used to use and finding many features that I used to use in the other app now behind a pay wall. Fatsecret provides everything that I need to easily track my macros, so that I can make the decisions that I need to for my health.
The free version is more than adequate for my needs and I appreciate it tracks the macros. There is good community support. I intend to upgrade to the paid version when I get a little extra money. UPDATE: I did upgrade to the paid version and love the added functionality. It allows me to add professionals (dietitian) who get very detailed reports.
Custom recipes with auto-calculated nutrients per serving
Build a home dish from ingredients, save it, and log it in one tap — the app handles the macros per serving

I use the free version and it has everything I need, you can even create your own recipe.

Clean, straightforward interface — takes a couple of days to learn
Minimal design, fast logging, nothing extraneous; feels light compared to bloated competitors
I have tried a few different calorie counting apps and find this one the best for me. Its extremely easy to use. I really love this app ❤️
Easy to use. Like the free features.
Actually helps people lose weight and understand their diet
Users report losing 10–40 kg and say the app revealed hidden calories they never knew they were eating

Very helpful app. Lost 30kg over 2 years mostly by following a routine of entering my meals each day, and learning the nutritional value of what I eat. And tracking my weight
Great resource! lost 16 lbs already
Community and badges help sustain motivation
Other people's stories and streaks badges are genuinely encouraging; no pushy AI
it's very easy to use. it has an excellent listing of food. the secret is you need to want to lose and stay motivated.
Very great experience. Great community.
simple food logging and weight journal app with community, no ads , no shnick shnack

A May update wiped the database — familiar foods now turn up nothing
After the update, local products and mainstream brands disappeared; barcode search became useless; the developer has gone silent for months
Many food items have just disappeared. Without any explanation. It's almost impossible find anything now.
I used to find all the common products on market in this app. Now it won't even find 2.5% milk!!! it was not like this before. all famous products were available and that was the reason why I was using it. might switch to a different app😒
As a free app, this works extremely well. Easy to count and track the calories. Their database is amazing for AU users. I have found almost all the known Aussie brands I frequently purchase. I can track my weight loss easily. I would highly recommend this app.
Russian-language entries stopped appearing after the update
Russian-language foods were hidden without warning — even chicken breast has to be entered manually; searching in English still works
No quick way to log calories without tying them to a food item
For an on-the-go entry or a home-cooked meal there's no fast manual calorie input — you have to search or build a recipe
Good app and very easy to use. The AI assistant and voice recognition work really well. The only downside is that you can't quickly add calories. You always have to load food which can be difficult for homemade dishes.
great app I really enjoy it and it seems to have everything as far as finding food . I wish there was just a quick way to add calories though. should just be able to add 100 cal without having to tie it to some food for quick on the go entries
At first it seems like the app is great and the free version allows for sharing with professionals. However, they frequently delete items from the database so you find yourself inputting the same food every random period of time.... and you can't just upload a photo of the nutritional value table but have to manually input every line of it... so if you don't mind doing that over and over and over
Swiping left deletes a diary entry with no confirmation
An accidental swipe erases a logged meal with no undo — users want a confirmation step or a way to disable the gesture
2020.06.12: So far, so good. Down #20. Thanks for this tool, but there seem to be a few caveats. Currently, three suggestions to improve it: Add confirmation prompt to food diary. It's too easy to delete entry with accidental swipe and or lose multiple entries when accidentally backing out too far Very frustrating when it happens. Add nutritional info for more micro nutrients. Lastly, I had to com
Remove the delete of the records by swiping! Too often you missclick (swipe) and delete the important food you ate.
Awkward portion sizes force mental math for simple foods
Many foods are defined only per 100 g or as '1 serving = multiple pieces,' so you have to manually calculate fractions of what you actually ate
Way better than myfitnesspal. The UI is simple and intuitive and not a cluttered mess and the barcode scanner is not a paid feature. I like how the serving size for junk food defaults to the entire package because lets be real here...
calories are all wrong for food items. what is 1 serving? I didn't have 1 serving, I had 280ml. I uninstalled it.
Cooked dishes are calculated using raw ingredient weights
Food loses weight during cooking, but there's no way to enter the final cooked weight — so macros end up inaccurate

It's a good way of keeping track of when and what I'm eat. It has made me rethink my eating habits. I like that it has a good amount of knowledge about food from various shops. The only thing that's a bit difficult is when I've cooked a trial recipes or something which isn't on the list as you can't get a proper calorie count. I have tried to break it down by the ingredients I've used which I thin
Why can't I report existing food for edit or block it so it does not confuse me in the future? For example, someone has put White Rice food with a gram measurement but for the COOKED rice. How does it make sense to have cooked ingredient value by default? How does one measure cooked rice in prepared meal? Deducting one more star now: food I've used before is no longer in search results. Why is it
Photo food recognition is unreliable
Photographing a dish rarely produces the right match — users fall back on barcodes instead of the camera
I'm not a fan of the name, but the app is great! I love that it works with both my Rally Health and my Google Fit. it's easy to add or update food in the tracker. I love that you can scan a barcode or take a picture of your meal, although I find that it doesn't always work right. So far, this is the best calorie-tracking app that I have used!

Love this app! Super straight forward and easy to use. Premium is honestly pretty cheap compared to other apps, and I love the steps and water tracker. The barcode scanner is super convenient, and the smart scan is decently accurate depending on how visible different components are. I do wish the history log for food and drinks were separate, but that's just a potential feature I'd like, I have no
Database calorie figures sometimes diverge from the package
Entries are user-submitted, so you occasionally encounter wrong flavors, incorrect calorie counts, and odd macro ratios
way off on many items... that can cost you a lot of calories in a day being off. don't trust this app. my tortillas said 190 scanned it the app said 150 huge difference.. works fine until day100 and the. it locks up and no way to contact anyone. havnt been able to use it for 2 days now.. .. it does not let me contact you for issues like this... the option is not here I tried several times... still

Scan the barcode - app comes up with a wrong result - I fix it and enter correct food item details for that barcode, save it as a consumed item in the food diary. All is well, right? NO! Scan same barcode - app gives wrong result AGAIN - I search for the food item that I've literally just entered and saved for this barcode earlier - and it's not in the list! Newly entered food items don't get save
The exercise section feels thin and users want more
Users ask for a broader activity list, more precise workout-type settings, and integration with video workouts

I'm enjoying the free version. I wish it had an exercise list, but the food diary is good.
One of the best app ever for counting calories and nutrients. I hope they add new in it, like adding more meals (like second breakfast, pre workout meal)
Weight-loss focus gets in the way of people maintaining or gaining
Everything is tuned for weight loss; there's almost no configuration for maintenance or muscle-gain goals
This is a great app to help you keep up with everything you eat , therefore assisting in weight loss.
I just downloaded this app. It said it was for free , but everything I clicked on is not if I want any recipes for dieting , I have to subscribe and pay. if I want to track my weight I have to pay if I want to do voice recording I have to pay this said it was a free app without subscribing or paying. I'm deleting this ASAP and Deleting notifications and blocking this app. Nobody wants to help anym
The default calorie target is too high — you won't lose weight on it
The recommended daily target matches maintenance calories; without knowing your own metabolism, results won't come
it's great cuz you can look up what you're planning on eating, even at a restaurant and find out the calories and adjust accordingly. also keeps you accountable. if there is a night and want something to munch on and check to see how many calories it is first, then I get something with lower calories to go to bed with.

Edited review: remaining 2 stars. I reached out to fatsecret and proved to them their RDI for maximum weight loss is literally my maintenance calories and they've told me they're not wrong. You will not lose weight using this app if you follow their RDI. I can use this app, but I know my BMR and what I should be eating.
