Epic: Kids' Books & Reading reviews
What users love and hate · 500 reviews analyzed · ★ 2.9
A huge kids' reading library of books, audio and video that genuinely makes children fall in love with reading — yet greets newcomers with a hard paywall before they can even get inside the app.
What users love
Kids start reading on their own — the core value
Parents say again and again that after Epic their child starts reading voluntarily, won't put the tablet down and asks for more. It genuinely pulls in kids who used to dislike books.
I love this app my kids love it they read stories every single day after school highly recommended
He loves to read and learn about different things
He told me the other day that he didn't used to like reading but now he loves it!
A huge library: books, audio and videos in one place
Thousands of books, beloved series like Cat Ninja and Diary of a Wimpy Kid, learning videos and audiobooks — for every age and level. There's so much content it serves both a classroom and a family.
I love it, it has all books, cat ninja, diary of a wimpy kid, literally everything
so great I love it so many books over 2000+ epic is great so great love it
It offers a huge library of engaging books that make reading exciting and accessible for children of different ages and levels.
"Read to me": narration with word highlighting teaches reading
The mode where the app reads aloud and highlights the words helps kids who struggle with reading and supports English as a foreign language. You can read yourself or listen.
so GOOD for people that have trouble reading!
I love the way this app highlighted words in the "read to me" format.
does audiobook read you and you can also read by yourself
Gamification: badges and reading "buddies" keep kids hooked
Badges for books read, cute reading-buddy pets and quizzes turn reading into a game — kids take pride in their collection and keep coming back. A safe, "productive" alternative to games.
you can also get badges for how many books you read and I have like 15 badges and it's like really fun
there's a lot of fun stuff in epic because there's so many creative books and badges for epic to have!
we like that it has a bunch of books and it gets buddies
What users hate
A paywall blocks the app before the very first page
The subscription is demanded right at the entrance: you can't see what's inside or try a single book — pay or leave. People uninstall without ever opening a single book.
it needs to pay to read and stops at the very first page
it is not free , it force you to pay or leave. you can't even take a look at it.
So bad ur forced to pay before even starting
The ads promise "free" — and that's a lie
It's advertised as free, and people install it for exactly that reason — only to be asked for money inside. They see it as outright deception and false advertising.
I saw epic in an ad . it said it was free . so I downloaded epic . but when I downloaded epic it asked for money
it would not let me immediately listen to my books,it has false advertising it says it is "free" it's not you have to pay.i will not be using this app...
not even going to bother with it. searched free books for children online and this was right on top. only free for 7 days. False advertisement.
No "X" button — you can't escape the free-trial screen
The "7-day free trial" screen pops up on every entry and won't close: no cross, no skip, no decline. Your only options are to agree or delete the app.
I like it but I dont want the thing and there is no "x" to not pay pls add a "x" for people who don't want to pay
it keeps forcing me to subscribe!!!! i hate it, add an x next time
Whenever I enter the app, I get a menu of "Free 7 day plan" like no, I don't want the plan and I CANT DO ANYTHING BUT READ AND DELETE THE APP. HORRIBLE APP, SO GREEDY
Sign-up breaks on entering the birth year
Creating an account often fails: after you enter the birth year it throws an "we can't sign you in" error, over dozens of attempts and reinstalls — even on a stable connection.
Sadly this app did not work at all. When I tried to sign in, right as I entered my birth year it said: error cannot sign in or something like that.
Would give 0 if possible , I downloaded 10 different times for my child, but every time I clicked in her birth year and it would say that I couldn't make an account even if my wifi was amazing.
it keeps saying " error we can't sign u in " whenever I enter my birthday! Ive installed this app again for 5 TIMES!!
Surprise charges hit accounts for large sums
People report unexpected charges of tens or hundreds of dollars — sometimes for an app that isn't even installed, or after refusing the service. Getting a refund is nearly impossible.
I do not have this app on my phone yet $144 just came out of my bank for this app not happy at all and don't know how to get it back
why is this app $89 and why does it automatically take money out of your account without permission. I need my money back.
my kids downloaded this app and now im subscribed and charged 90 dollars im furious if I can have sombody help me with refund please.
Cancelling and refunds are their own ordeal
The cancel button on the site doesn't work, refund emails go unanswered, and two subscriptions can somehow run on one email at once. Trust in the company collapses.
was unable to cancel my subscription because the cancel button on the website did not work, which led to charges for a service I did not use.
won't let me cancel the subscription. looks like a scam!
have 2 memberships somehow charging concurrently under the same email. such a mess , not resolved.
Free for schools, but families have to pay
Teachers and students get free access at school, but reading the same books at home costs money. Homeschooling parents and families in poorer countries feel cut off from learning.
it's not fair, you have to be in a school to get a free account while on the other hand if you want to read at home you have to pay
Nonsense! What the heck!? Free for educators but not free for families?
The app isn't free. The price should be listed plain and simple! The free tag is only for a selected group.
Pricing stings, and access is capped by time of day
The subscription costs more than premium Netflix for arguably less content, and the free school access only works until 4 p.m. — so kids can't get in after school or on weekends.
Price is almost higher then premium Netflix. The price is sadly too high for the level of content available in quanity and quality.
$13.99/month subscription fee; after the first week, you pay $85 annually
so epic shuts down at 3:00 p.m so kids can't come home after School and read on epic
Book previews are just 3-4 pages, and progress gets lost
Even once inside, without a subscription you only get a 3-4 page "preview" of each book. And paying users lose profiles, favorites and reading progress — sometimes along with the series they paid for.
Worst app ever i can't even read 8-bit kitten because i can only read 4 pages i hate this app
Previews are 4 pag- I mean 3 PAGES LONG.
it also keeps deleting the books i favorite. but i do like the books on it.
