Funimate Video & Motion Editor reviews

What users love and hate, from real reviews

An "After Effects for mobile" with a built-in social network — a powerful effects-and-shakes editor that trained a generation of mobile editors on iPhone, but is now losing exactly them, because the flagship experience stayed on iOS while the Android build decayed into something that won't export.

What users love

It's not an editor, it's a social network for editors — the feed, accounts and contests retain people harder than the effects

Funimate sells a community, not a tool: posts, profiles, follows and official contests turn editing into a public status game. Winning a contest grants Pro and an identity ("I won"), and the feed gives a reason to return even with no new project. This — not the features — explains the years-long loyalty and the comparisons to Video Star rather than CapCut.

I've been using Funimate for about a year now and the community is amazing.

I use pro, because I won a funimate competiton

My account @quokka_fm was falsely deleted after I won the #fmchristmasmagic contest.

A low skill barrier is the core acquisition engine: "easier than CapCut" pulls beginners in by the batch

Positioning as "easier and faster than CapCut/Alight Motion" works as a funnel for total beginners: people open the app they saw on TikTok and ship their first edit in an evening without tutorials. Ready-made templates, shakes and presets deliver an instant wow — that's the mechanism filling the top of the funnel and the community with new creators.

better than capcut, easy to use, easy 5 stars.

this app is amazing even tho I've never used it before it's my first time

easy to navigate, good alternative to capcut

Funimate is a skill gym: people don't just edit, they level up a craft and don't want to lose it

A distinctive retention hook — the app is felt as a place to learn editing, not to make one clip. Users talk about it "expanding my knowledge and skills," "learning how to edit," watching YouTube tutorials. That makes Funimate part of a creator's identity, so leaving feels like losing a leveled-up skill — stickier than any subscription.

this app really helped me a lot with editing, expanded my knowledge and skills through it

The effects are amazing and I want to learn how to edit on it.

Love this app. Was hard to use at first but got the hang of it after watching yt tutorials

Rewarded ads over a hard paywall: unlocking features by watching an ad is a smart alternative to "pay or leave"

The primary monetization mechanism isn't a subscription but temporarily unlocking Pro features and removing the watermark by watching an ad. For the target audience (cardless teens) this works: you can drop the watermark for free, sample Pro, and stay. Those who grasp the scheme clearly value it — it keeps non-payers inside the ecosystem instead of expelling them.

quite nice. I like that you can watch ads to temporarily unlock features

You also don't have to PAY to have no watermark :)

I love this app and even though it has adds it still better than the other apps around imo

Weak spots

What users hate

The product silently forked into two different apps by platform, and the Android branch became second-class

The same brand delivers two incompatible experiences: on iPhone it runs like a flagship, on Android it's a cut-down, laggy twin missing features. This isn't a build glitch but a platform-priority decision, and it ejects the most loyal cohort — multi-year users who switched from iPhone to Android — at the exact moment they've learned to edit and are ready to pay.

On ios products, it works quite well, but on Android it's a mess due to all the bugs and issues

sucks that most apps nowadays only cater to IOS users and leave us android users on the wayside with a buggy version of their app

I wish this app worked as good with android as it does with iPhone.

All the value hangs on a server-side element library — when it goes down, editing is physically impossible

Funimate taught users to build edits around downloadable elements and overlays, so it made itself hostage to a single network call. The "something went wrong" on element load turns the beloved tool into a brick for everyone at once — users literally say they "can't edit without them." Cloud-dependence for a core creative feature is an architectural risk, not a minor bug.

i cant use any element from the library because after loading it says something went wrong

A lot of people cant edit without them.

No element is working for some reason please fix this other editors are having the same problem

The one promised payoff — exporting the finished video — is the failure point itself

Allowed-exception card: the defect here is not cosmetic but strategically fatal. The app lets users complete the entire edit — an hour, two, three days of work — then breaks on the very last save step. This inverts the usual funnel: the user activates, invests emotionally, then loses everything at the most visible moment, turning each engaged creator into a public critic heading back to CapCut.

ive worked a whole 3 DAYS on this edit and i have to change the clips EVERY. SINGLE. FLIPPING. TIME.

I had spent 1 HOUR AND A HALF on editing and it turned out to be really good but then instant images.

I really love the app when it actually works though.

Video collapses into still images on export — the most memorable way to lose a creator

A distinct, especially destructive failure mode: the finished edit exports as a set of frozen images instead of motion. It cuts deeper than a normal crash because the output looks done but is dead — and the user only discovers it after opening the file in their gallery. This outcome is repeatedly the final straw before uninstall and return to a rival.

the video turning into photo after export everytime

THE VIDEOS BECAME LITERAL IMAGES.

every clip turned into images and I spent hours editing my video

The app has a skill ceiling: it onboards beginners brilliantly but releases them the moment they outgrow it

The very simplicity that attracts becomes a ceiling: advanced users need animation graphs, precise curves, fine audio control — and these are missing or stripped down. Experienced editors openly advise "switching programs." So Funimate systematically loses its own graduates — the most engaged and monetizable — handing them to CapCut and After Effects.

as you progress in editing it's better to just switch programs than to stay loyal to this app

I don't reccomend for people who are intermediate editors.

I was trying to edit something and realized I needed a bounce graph which I did not have

The open UGC effects library is both a strength and a reputational landmine — NSFW sitting next to kids

Funimate lets users upload their own overlays and elements into a shared library — huge variety and a reason to return. But that same openness without working moderation lets inappropriate content into a product whose audience is children and teens. "Reporting does nothing" complaints show the UGC mechanism outran the company's ability to police it — a direct brand and app-store risk.

also a lot of inappropriate content people post on here.

there are lots of glitches and spaces where people can post nsfw. I don't like that and there are actual children on this app.

People also upload inappropriate stuff into the elements, and reporting them rarely does anything.

Marquee features (3D models) are gated to iOS — Android users watch a promise they're never handed for years

The most-wanted effects — 3D models, certain graphs — stay iOS-exclusive for years, and Android users see it and count the months. Showcasing a feature to everyone but shipping it to half is a powerful demotivator: it turns the Android base into resentful holdouts who stay only because "there's no editing app like yours" and leave at the first alternative.

it only gave 3d models to apple so dissapointing

add 3d model on android, it's been years

when y'all gonna add the 3d feature on mobile

Dead support turns every bug into a public review: people "edit" their rating instead of filing a ticket

Support goes unanswered for years and the email seems not to exist — so users hold their conversation with the developer right in the store, editing one review over and over ("edit:", "update:"). With no private channel, every problem becomes a public, rating-lowering complaint: the feedback mechanism is broken in a way that amplifies reputational damage instead of containing it.

not even contacting customer service over the last few years has helped, as ive never gotten a SINGLE response.

after one year of my review they did not respond or anything.

it rarely gets updated and the support email doesn't even exist anymore

No "remove" for an applied effect — irreversible actions break the editor's workflow

Funimate's strength is layering animations and shakes, but you can't take a single effect back off: no remove button, no reverse, no reliable undo. For editing, which is inherently iterative (try-remove-adjust), irreversibility kills the work loop — the user either restarts the project or quits. This isn't a small missing feature but a break in the editor's core mental model.

I do love how you can overlap the animations but HOW DO I REMOVE THE ANIMATIONS

Also there is no reverse button on samsung..

the undo button doing nothing

Pro effects aren't flagged — users hit the paywall only at the end, after the whole edit is done

The design hides which effects are paid until export time: the user assembles a clip, then learns at the end that one Pro effect blocks the save and can't locate it. This isn't about "too expensive" but about blind monetization UX — no flag and no way to find the Pro element turns each session into a trap and erodes trust even among the willing-to-pay.

when you accidentally use a pro effect, they should state where you used it. Ive edited long videos on this app but I've always struggled to find where the pro effect is.

ic just had trouble with the "flash" being pro yet i love the variety of effects and filters

I don't understand why we have to pay slow smooth motion

Import works for photos but not video — a tool built for video edits trips at its own front door

A recurring, diagnostically telling failure: photos import and edit fine, but video doesn't (won't select, freezes on the first clip, demands "at least one clip"). For an app whose whole point is video edits, breaking precisely at the video-import step strikes the core value and makes users doubt the product does its one main job.

I can edit pictures, but editing videos? no. The clips would freeze

why can't i select videos in funimate but can select photos?

What's happening why can't I import videos on Funimate
