Moonly: Moon Phases & Calendar reviews
What users love and hate, from real reviews
A moon calendar that grew into a full Vedic spiritual platform (astrology, tarot, runes, meditations, an AI guide named Luna) — its defining tension is that an AI-art redesign and a shift to the Vedic system alienated exactly the spiritually-minded users whose feelings the app was built to serve.
What users love
When it works, the app wins as a single self-reflection ritual, not a fortune-teller
For regulars, the strength is that the app bundles meditations, affirmations, tarot, runes and learning articles in one place — and frames them as a tool to 'understand your present,' not predict your future. This segment calls it 'my peace,' a 'self-reflection tool' that meets them where they are without pressure — and it's that framing (growth, not fortune-telling) that keeps them for years.
This feels less like an astrology app and more like a self-reflection tool
It doesn’t try to predict my future — it helps me understand my present
I like that it meets me where I am, without pressure
Live support acts as a churn-recovery machine — and pulls the rating up by itself
Unusual for an astro app: support is repeatedly named (Natalie) and described as fixing things in minutes and winning the user back. People openly raise their score from 2-3 to 5 after a reply. That turns support into a retention asset: even when the product stumbles, a fast human response intercepts churn before it becomes a deletion.
the support team (especially Natalie) was incredibly kind and helpful
UPDATE Moonly promptly helped me get my account onto my new phone!
a quick and positive response to this review brought my rating up to 2 stars
The AI guide Luna retains people who otherwise distrust chatbots
For a slice of users Luna is the headline feature: she remembers past details, ties them to current experiences and holds 'deep' conversations, so people who refuse every other AI make an exception for her. Here AI works as retention, not irritation — but the very same mechanic splits the base: to one segment Luna is an intimate companion, to another she's the 'slop' that killed the app's soul.
I don't chat with any AI except this one
never related to astrology until this app!
A lot of new features on the tarot side hanging, including Luna
What users hate
To a spiritual audience, AI art reads as a betrayal of values, not a design refresh
An esoteric audience comes for authenticity and human warmth, so generative images and AI text don't just look cheaper — they break trust: users say AI harms the planet, contradicts the app's own nature-led advice, and that 'real witches support real artists.' Swapping hand art for AI erases the very mystical credibility that kept people subscribed for years.
goes against a lot of the nature-led advice the app is giving
real witches support real artists!
it has lost so much of it warmth and personality
The Vedic system silently overrides the user's sign — and that wipes out trust in everything else
The app computes in the sidereal (Vedic) system but never warns you and offers no toggle to Western. A user sees the 'wrong' sign (Leo instead of Virgo, Gemini instead of theirs) and draws the only logical conclusion — the app is broken or lying. One wrong sign at the door discredits every reading after it: if the basics are off, no one trusts the forecasts.
they use Vedic astrology and that puts me in a completely different sign set up and it is all wrong
The inability to choose which astrology system you use, according to your own preferences is annoying as hell.
I do not Identify with Gemini at all
The redesign buried the lunar calendar — it removed the one feature people open it for
The app used to open straight to the current moon phase, and the calendar let you scroll back and forth with favourable-day markers — that was the daily ritual. After the update the phase vanished from the home screen and day-scrolling disappeared. The name 'Moonly' promises the moon, but the product drifted to paid courses and upsells — the habit's core is broken and daily users leave.
The centre of the whole app used to be the fact that you could go back and forth
Now I go in, and it is nowhere to be found on the main page
I've noticed the lunar calendar got cut out of the features
Onboarding demands a confession before any value — and filters out the curious at the door
Just to see a moon phase, a user first wades through a long questionnaire: dozens of personal questions, a forced 'cause of emotional instability' choice, a pronoun prompt in the very first second. For a light, curious visit that's a heavy emotional tax up front — people quit before the app shows anything at all. The funnel loses its top before activation.
the questionnaire was forcing me to choose a cause of emotional instability
I just wanted to know when there's a full moon and it asked like 50 personal questions
So much nonsense they want you to fill out before you even get the app up
A binary gender prompt at signup repels the values-sensitive segment
The app asks for pronouns/gender first thing, but the list is only 'male' and 'female' with no they/them, and 'prefer not to say' doesn't feel like the same thing. For a spiritually-inclusive audience that signals 'you're not welcome here' — and non-binary users delete on the first screen, before seeing any content. A cheap fix that costs a real slice of the target market.
there is no they/them option
The only options for gender were male and female
many of these astrology apps are anti, or indifferent to men
Changing the meditation voice collapsed the value for the audio-first users
A chunk of users came mainly for the meditations and falling asleep to a voice — they had a favourite narrator (Walker Barnard). After the update the voice was swapped for a harsh, 'robotic' or monotone American one, and the old music was pulled. For an audio use-case the voice IS the product; the 'improvement' broke exactly the experience they stayed for.
I am really missing the audio tracks by Walker Barnard
why on earth would this be the voice you've picked for meditations
annoying sound effect ai type voices that wind me up not relax me
Shrinking the daily reading to a headline kills the reason to come back daily
The daily habit ran on a detailed reading with specifics — which activities are favourable today, the colour of the day, what to do and avoid. The update replaced paragraphs with short headlines and removed the green/orange favourable-day markers. When the daily payload shrinks to a line, the 'open and read' ritual disappears — and that ritual was what drove daily return.
see green and orange dots as to what day is favourable/unfavourable... that has DISAPPEARED
no more moon-info and really TLDR daily descriptions
the daily to dos and what not to do was simple
The redesign split the one-screen snapshot into tabs and killed the 'glance in a second' habit
The old version's strength was that the whole day fit on one screen — glance and close. The new interface scattered the same content across many windows and steps, added a 'childish/bubbly' look and lag. For a daily micro-check ritual, extra taps are habit-death: the product got 'prettier' but costlier to use, and long-time users describe the navigation as a chore.
The interface is awful to find features I used before on the homepage
too many windows and info on the daily page, very confusing
Now, it feels cluttered and confusing, and the peaceful atmosphere has vanished
A locked card inside a three-card spread breaks the logic of the ritual itself
The free tarot gives three cards, but one of the three is locked behind premium — and a three-card spread without its third card stops working as a practice, not just as a trimmed feature. It's a structural break: the product shows you a ritual and then won't let you complete it, undermining trust in the tool itself. Add the AI interpreter that sometimes describes cards other than the ones drawn.
even a 3 card tarot spread has one card locked for premium users, which is useless when doing a 3 card spread
the ai interpretor of cards sometimes describes different cards that are presented to me
the recent update has ruined the insight for the tarot cards. it no longer works.
The 'favourable/unfavourable' daily signal quietly demoralizes the user
The daily summary colours days favourable/unfavourable, and when someone gets 'red almost every day,' the app flips from a support tool into a source of anxiety — literally making people feel depressed. The team itself acknowledged it and added nuance instead of binary labels, winning users back; that shows a blunt binary day-rating is a behavioral risk, not harmless presentation.
Almost every single day, all my forecasts were red
adjusted to have more nuance than just "favorable/unfavorable"
its hard to know what moon cycle
Uniformly 'fairy-maiden' art narrows the app to an audience it signals it isn't for
The new look made the visuals feminine and 'fairy-tale': moving illustrations of girls, fair-skinned maidens, a 'too feminine' tone. That cuts out two segments at once — men and darker-skinned users — who explicitly say they don't feel represented or welcomed. The aesthetic shift acts as an involuntary audience filter: the product visually declares who it's for and loses the rest.
dont feel welcomed or that ppl who are darker than the fair skinned maidens aren't shown
I don't need random moving illustrations of girls
the switch to the black and boring look and bad AI art just was too much
The dream diary is shown but won't let you save — a showcase feature with no substance
The AI dream interpretation is presented as a marquee feature, but it lacks the basic diary mechanic: entries don't save, you can't go back in the calendar to reread past dreams, and adding a new entry hangs even for paying subscribers. A dream with no saving and no history is a one-off trick, not a practice: the feature promises a journaling ritual but withholds the cumulative value that would bring people back.
there is no possibility to save dreams and go back in the calendar to check them
i could no longer add a dream entry even i am a Moonly Plus subscriber
The 'dream analysis'feature is now stuck and won't let me add a new one
