Despite the avalanche of negativity, a share of users say OkCupid is where they met their spouse or partner, sometimes years ago. Many praise being able to message for free and try the app before paying, and note there are real people mixed in among the fakes.

The single most common complaint: people get dozens of "likes," but almost all are from Africa, Asia or the Philippines, while the few local matches sit behind a paywall. Many pay, discover the likes are fake or from the other side of the planet, and realize the whole feed was bait to sell a subscription.

A huge slice of users simply can't get into the app. They're suddenly logged out, password resets fail (the email never comes), and trying to sign back in throws "invalid" or "already in use" errors on the phone number while the SMS verification code never arrives. Some note the problem has dragged on for years.

People get banned within minutes of signing up or after years of loyalty — often mid-conversation. Asked why, they get a boilerplate "suspicious activity," their appeal is rejected as "final," and they also lose hundreds of answered compatibility questions in the process.

Even for free the app becomes useless: you set a small radius and get shown people on another continent who manually fake their location via Passport mode. Distance settings and preferences are simply ignored, making it impossible to find anyone local.

The payment goes through and money is taken, but the app says "not paid" and won't unlock the features you bought. Premium flickers on and off, forcing constant restarts and refreshes, and refunds are nearly impossible — support replies with autoresponders or stays silent.

The app loops the same already-swiped people, freezes on white screens, and the bottom bar slides under Android's system buttons so you can't tap "next" or open messages. Nagging notification pop-ups won't close no matter how often you hit the X.

OkCupid used to let you meet and message for free; now nearly everything costs money — seeing who liked you, liking back, or messaging all require an overpriced subscription ($30–40/month). Many refuse on principle, calling the model greedy and predatory.

Users run into fake profiles that beg for money, fish for contact info, or pull them into sextortion and romance scams. AI bots funnel people into sales pitches, and reports on profiles go unanswered — leaving the impression fakes are tolerated to pad the numbers.

A recurring theme is nostalgia for what OkCupid once was. Over time they removed search, text answers to questions, cut thousands of questions down to hundreds, and dropped the "enemy percentage." Now it's just a Tinder-style swipe app, and longtime fans no longer see the point.

When something breaks — a ban, a failed payment, lost access — reaching support means hitting boilerplate autoreplies like "someone will get back to you, be patient" or total silence. People send ten emails with no reply, and even paying customers can't get help.
