A direct Duolingo rival — and it often wins
After Duolingo "did some very stupid things," people switch here and stay: same formats but without the childishness, with real grammar and drills. Many flat-out call it better than the green owl.
Have no problems so far. it's Duolingo-esque, which if you're looking for after they did some very stupid things, it's a great, even better replacement.

Pronunciation by real humans, not a robot
Words voiced by real native speakers (both Latin American and Spain variants) is a standout: you can trust the pronunciation, and the word is even read out slowly.
I love the word of the day with REAL HUMANS pronouncing each word so that you KNOW for sure that you got the pronunciation correct. they have Latin & Spain Spanish pronunciations for each word.

Grammar is genuinely taught — with videos and the logic of the language
A real strength for serious learners: lessons explain why the grammar works as it does, with short teacher videos, conjugations and drills. It teaches how the language works rather than rote vocab.

It flags a word's region — Spain, Latam — but offers no dialect switch
A detail serious learners value: the app marks where a word or phrase comes from (Spain, Latam) and teaches regional differences. But there's no dialect toggle, and Castilian Spanish specifically is missing.
Vocab provided is vast, and indications are given if a word/phrase is from Spain, Latam, etc. And you can search English to Spanish or vice versa as needed.
Especially for regional spanish because it tells you about different countries
I think it'd be really helpful if there was an option to switch dialects?
Word of the Day quietly pulls users back in every day
A simple but beloved hook: a daily notification with a new word and sensible example sentences. For many it's the main reason they open the app and the habit that keeps learning going.
I use mostly as word of the day and it does that perfectly. Pops up on phone once a day with a new word, click to open the app and it gives sensible examples of word use.

What users hate
Word tiles vanish on tap — making lessons impossible to pass
The most painful bug: in the build-a-phrase exercises the tapped word disappears and never comes back, so every answer is marked wrong. Several users call the app outright unusable because of it.
when doing the lessons where you pick the words to match what is being said, the word just disappears and never shows up again. I cant complete a single lesson unless I want all the answers to be wrong.
currently UNUSABLE for me, words disappear after pressing them with no way to get them back, and so regardless if my answer is correct every question is labeled wrong because of this weird bug.
Sometimes word tiles will dissappear making it impossible to get a correct answer.
No dark theme — blinding, after years of requests
The oldest unmet request: the interface is too bright for outdoors and evening study, and a dark mode still doesn't exist. Some refuse to buy a subscription purely over this.

Freezes, lags and crashes — especially on newer phones
Stability is shaky: it lags while typing, freezes, crashes during vocab practice, and dies after thirty seconds on newer Pixels. For some it dropped the rating from five stars.
The app is sometimes too laggy and it freezes! While I type something in Spanish during the courses, it gets laggy. Please fix this!!!

Please update the app to work on pixel 10 pro. It crashes every time after about 30 seconds.
Ads are tolerable, but the subscription pitch hits the moment you open it
Most call the ads unobtrusive and short, but the irritant is elsewhere: you're pushed to buy a subscription before you've even seen the app, and forced to sign in via Google/Facebook. For some that's a red flag.
Immediately prompted to pay for a subscription when I havent even seen the app yet, that's already 🚩 red flag #1.
I'd have it 5 stars if it wasn't so hard to avoid the adds for the premium version

It doesn't train speaking — only typing and picking words
Anyone wanting speaking practice is let down: the app never asks you to say words aloud, only to type or choose them. For some that wasn't enough, and the male AI voice is hard to understand.

It used to be a clean dictionary — now it's bloated and lost its definitions
Some long-time users complain the good dictionary turned into an overloaded learning app: the actual definitions are gone (only example sentences remain), there's too much going on, and one even cites "thousands of ads."
It used to actually give the definitions of the words, English and Spanish. Took a break from studying Spanish and when I came back, the definitions were all gone. Only example sentences.
it used to be great dictionary but not anymore, now it's some weird app for learning with thousands of ads. I'm very disappointed, they have ruined great app
when you finally get into the app there's about 100 things to do and none of them are a dictionary. Feels like false advertising.
