Neobanks
In neobanking, users forgive any bug but will not forgive losing control of their own money. Trust is built not on rates and features but on predictable access and a real human at the other end when things go wrong. Whoever solves "my money is suddenly unreachable and there is no one to talk to" will take the market.
Three findings
Trust when money is under lock
The central nerve of neobanking is the moment the account is frozen, the dispute is lost, or funds are on hold while rent and food need paying. This includes sudden account closures with no explanation and fraud disputes where the bank sides against the customer. These are not complaints about service quality — they are existential fear about one's own money. The winner here builds transparent reasons, clear timelines, and protection against fraudsters rather than against customers. This is the foundation everything else rests on.
Account closed for no reason — money frozen41
After years of use, the account is suddenly shut down with no reason given and no way to access your own money
Used chime for 6 years, then I questioned them about money being taken out and 3 days later my account was completely shut down with no reason given
After 8 years of being with them they freeze our accounts over the bank holiday weekend and then email us to say they are closing them down and do not have to give a reason
customer for 6 years with every 1c spent being documented. closed my acc under no reason provided
Money stolen — you lose the dispute26
Fraudulent charges are confirmed, but the dispute is rejected within days; the bank sides with the merchant or the thief and issues no refund
I HAD $1100 STOLEN OUT OF MY CHECKING ACCOUNT BY A SCAMMER BANK ACCT IN THE NETHERLANDS, I FILED MY DISPUTE WITH CHIME AND IN LITERALLY JUST 2 DAYS THEY REJECTED MY CLAIM SAYING THAT NO ERROR OCCURRED
I was scammed £5k by people who already knew all my details with Revolut including the address registered with them. Revolut is claiming the activity was normal
Had over 55 unauthorized transactions the refused to support me in. This company supports fraud and makes it easy to have your money stolen
Frozen funds = hunger, rent, stranded abroad24
When access to the account disappears, people are left with nothing for food, rent, or gas — sometimes stuck in a foreign country
after 5 days in S.Korea the card started getting refused in shops. I had £1000 in the account. online help was quick but left me with less confidence that I'd actually get my money
WHAT WOULD OF HAPPEND IF I WAS OUT OF TOWN AND AND THIS HAPPENED I WOULD OF BEEN COMPLETELY STRANDED
I’ve been left starving and struggling for a month. Support just passes the buck saying "it's automated."
An app update locks you out of your money20
A forced update fails to install or breaks the login, there is no web fallback, and access to the account vanishes at the worst possible moment
If i dont update i gotta sign out. I cant even peek at my statements I cant even see how much I got
Help! I Can't access my money unless I update - my phone has no space to update. I need control of my account! They need to make a web version when the app doesn't work!
the app immediately crashes. I have updated this app probably 5x in a month, uninstalled & reinstalled ... still the app crashes before I even get to a login
Clean design and "pots" — the reason people stay for years19
A simple interface, instant transaction notifications, and money split into pots or envelopes genuinely help people stay on top of their budget
having ADHD is a nightmare! being able to separate my money into pots and see everything clearly has enabled me to take control of my spending habits!
Most favorite features are that you get a notification for each and every transaction, dividing your income into Buckets (which they call Spaces) automatically, and lastly having a one page overview of your money
the instant spending notifications keep me on budget
Card locked — charges go through anyway14
The user freezes the card to block fraud, but charges still post; meanwhile legitimate purchases with a funded account get declined as "suspicious"
WHY ARE YA TAKING MONEY OFF OF MY ACCOUNT WITH MY CARD LOCKED WITHOUT ASKING FOR SUBSCRIPTIONS
I always lock my card to prevent unauthorized transactions. I cant access the app to be able to unlock my card. without the app I do not have access to my funds!
trying to make a purchase and won't let me bc it "seems suspicious", while I'm at a gas station I literally use my card at 3-5x/week
Live human support as oxygen
For an online bank with no branches, support is the product. In a crisis the user hits a bot that loops, a chat that promises to follow up and never does, and no phone number even on a paid plan. Add the verification wall at signup and the account lockout when a phone number changes. Whoever delivers fast access to a competent human at the exact moment of distress — not on a calm Tuesday — wins loyalty that never leaves. This lever turns a frightened customer into a brand advocate.
In a crisis, you only get a bot33
When money is gone or the account is locked, there is no live person to reach: the bot loops, chat says "we'll get back to you" and never does
They have effectively stolen my money by giving automated AI responses for why my transactions are blocked. been going on for over 2 months with no way of contacting a human
The promised 24/7 support is useless. They reply quite fast, true. But this doesn't make any difference as all they say is "we will get back to you". They never come back in weeks
if you ever need help don't cont on a human to talk to
They won't let you open an account — but they kept your data22
Identity verification fails with a vague "legal reasons" rejection, video verification loops endlessly, and the submitted passport and selfie cannot be deleted
after ID verification the app just showed that they can't offer me the service due to legal reasons. no proper explanation of any kind. I've had no trouble opening accounts in other banks. to top it all they now have my data and there's no option to delete my information
I made 7 verification videos more 3 secons and still didn't let me continue
Can't get past the video & audio authentication despite reinstalling several times. So I downloaded 'Revolut'. That was all ready within 5 mins
Tied to one phone — change your number, lose your account11
When a phone or number changes, access is gone permanently: the verification code goes to the old number, there is no support to call, and the money is stuck
staff can't change your email or phone if you lost contact information
MADE A ACCOUNT NEVER GOT TO USE IT OR ACCESS IT cant get help had a phone number change and LOST ACCESS
can't swap from one phone to the other can't remember password want let me inn
Honest advance and paycheck economics
The magnet that draws users in is early paycheck access and the pay advance — and for these, users forgive a lot. But the monetization is poisoned by bait: "up to $750" is advertised, $50 is delivered; limits are cut after on-time repayments; the algorithm pulls funds before payday; subscriptions are added without consent and cannot be cancelled; the credit-builder card hurts credit. Overdraft protection quietly disappears here too. Whoever brings transparent limits that grow with loyalty, and a subscription that is easy to leave, will turn the hook into an honest revenue model.
Advertised "up to $750" advance turns into fifty bucks27
They advertise advances up to $250–$750, but after linking your paycheck and repaying on time you get $50–$100 — and the limit shrinks instead of growing
My take home pay each week is between $1,300-$1,500 and I only get $100 paycheck advance with $75 fee free overdraft
Their cash advance system makes no sense and is a joke. I've been using for a while now and it went from a 600 advance to 100 for no reason
every time I am ready for an increase in my advance loan, Varo intentionally makes the due date short to make credit for the increase It looks like your payment is late
Paycheck two days early — that's why people stay23
Early direct deposit is the core hook: money in the account two days before payday, consistently for years
I love chime. I get paid two days early and it's never late. you can also earn money
Paid early feature is a game changer. Nice one team!
I've been with varo for 4 years now. couldn't be happier. I receive my check with my account and always receive it three days early
Subscription slapped on without consent, impossible to cancel18
A paid subscription is charged — sometimes without the user's knowledge — and cancellation is blocked by a requirement to drain all accounts to zero, keeping the last five dollars hostage
you have to remove subscription you have to withdraw all the money from the account. they won't let you withdraw last 5 dollars. so you keep paying 20 dollars every month
will purposely freeze you from canceling their $39.99 mandatory monthly fee due to a "pending transaction" that must clear first. no obvious cancel button
I didnt request a loan and am still being charged $3 a month. That fee I knew nothing about
A small advance in a tight spot — a lifeline18
A small advance between paychecks rescues people at hard moments — far cheaper than a 386% payday loan, enough to cover a bill or buy groceries
I've been in quite a few pinches over the past 5 years and have been rescued by Dave every time. it's a MUCH better option than a payday loan that charges 386% interest
the Cash advance option is also a huge help in these trying times. Thank you, Albert!
very helpful with keeping track of my credit score and getting it up. The free overdraft also definitely helps when I've been a few bucks short on my grocerys
The banking app turns into a billboard15
Instead of a balance, users see pop-up offers, cashback banners, and spam notifications — the banking product feels like one long advertisement
I have a standard account. And I have the feeling that the entire app is a huge ad for the paid accounts
When you just want to check your balance then get spammed by marketing adds other banks don't do this
keep these absolutely STUPID "Discover more features" popups. i dont want to set a budget, open a savings accounts or whatever just to get rid of that
Overdraft protection enabled — then quietly removed13
Free overdraft is granted and then revoked without warning — the user budgets around that cushion and wakes up to find the available balance has shrunk
Chime repeatedly enables and then removes my SpotMe eligibility, causing unexpected drops in available funds. Most recently, I planned my budget around money that was expected to be available for groceries, only to wake up and find my available balance reduced
Chime eliminated that $200 overdraft line of credit and told me they would only reinstate it if I had a direct deposit come to Chime
they reset my borrow limit and took over draft away, for what?
Two more findings — with the breakdown and review quotes.
7 opportunities
Ideas users ask for themselves — each backed by proven demand.
10 apps
The existing players have split into two camps. One group — Revolut, Monzo, N26 — won on simplicity, multi-currency, and spending pots, but bleeds goodwill through account freezes and ghost-level support. The other group — Chime, Varo, Current, Dave, Albert — holds on with early paycheck access and cash advances, but erodes trust with unpredictable limits, sneaked subscriptions, and disputes that users always lose. Neither camp has closed the loop of "guaranteed money access plus a live human in a crisis," and that gap is wide open.
