Yazio: AI Calorie Tracker reviews

What users love and hate · 500 reviews analyzed · ★ 2.4

A calorie counter with photo-based food recognition and gamification — built for people trying to lose weight and keep a structured food diary.

What users love

Can't edit ingredients or portion weight after photo recognition

Describing a dish in text is faster and more accurate than using the camera

I have a love hate relationship with yazio, it's a good calorie tracker but the gamification became unbearable. I'm a paid user and there is no way to turn the tips and all around stupidity. I don't want to commit to a streak, I said no for the 6th times today just leave me use the app I pay for. And this mascot and overall interface? Is your target demographic kids? If this continue I'll just mov

ai is not accurate, allow to adjust ingredients from ai photo scan by prompting right ingredients

I subscribed to the Pro Plan for 1 year, but I’m a bit disappointed. As a Filipino user, there are very limited Filipino food options in the recipes and search bar, and some calorie data feels inaccurate. I also hope the AI scan feature improves by allowing users to adjust ingredient weights after scanning for more accurate calorie counting. Please add more Filipino foods in future updates. If imp

Nutrition tips pop up after every entry and can't be turned off

Tips can now be snoozed for two weeks

Apparently I have to rewrite this review, because the developers don't read these reviews fully. Why are Smart Insights forced on us? Why do you not allow us to turn this feature off?

Been using this app for years now, I don't want to change, BUT on the most recent updates: 1. Add an option to turn AI tracking off 2. Add the verified button back; scrolling 20 items to find Salt is annoying 3. Add an option to turn off coach tips or set it to end of the week instead of after every log 4. Where did the create recipe button go?

A great app in general, but so much stuff in there that I don't need and it's simply not possible to deactivate them -I don't need streaks -I don't need all these animations -I don't want meal tips I just want a functional app to track everything with as minimal time necessary to do so. Please add settings for users to set it up as they want it.

Gamification — streaks, diamonds, mascot — irritates adult users

For some users, streaks and diamonds provide real motivation

Useful app, but screw all these forced popups and the candy-crush level gamification, man. I want an adult calorie counter app, not Farmville. Why do I have to click on "I'm committed" every day, without even being able to go back? Didn't realize I've joined a cult

Used to be pretty good even though the ads were annoying enough to make me pay for it but the gamification elements ruined the app for me. There's no way to turn them off and it's not motivating me to stay on track but the opposite. I also had problems with the word search that seems to use a badly written fuzzy finder algorithm. The AI photo tool was pretty neat though. Canceled my subscription a

Good appin general, not much flexibility if you're not Pro. But the one thing that will most likely make me unsuscribe from my Pro plan is the anoying animation of the yeti. Make it so the user can opt out of animations please!

A massive onboarding survey of dozens of questions before you can use the app

For some, the detailed setup creates a sense of a thoughtful, personalized plan

So horrible to use, clunky and stuffed with pop-ups. I've moved to an alternative. I almost quit in the setup process, what an overwhelming amount of questions. Should be an option to skip them for those who don't need the app to create a personalised plan for them. This app is worse every day, well done.

annoying long survey that doesnt even fit all types of people, it starts by assuming you are worthless and a failure, and trying to cheer you up?

installed it and then uninstalled it before I even really got to the app. the questionaire you have to answer in the beginning was just to much for me.

Food database is thin on ethnic and local products

The overall database is large and most common items are easy to find

Not the best. I did the free trial and then kept going thinking it would bill me monthly £2.99, but it whacks you with the full £35 straight away, so I've requested a refund. It doesn't have many foods that I buy in the UK on it and the calorie goals are weird - you can eat takeaways and still not reach your day's calories somehow, and it seems to ignore the fat content in things. I've used better

many dishes are said to belong to is.real but they aren't! like since when shaahouka is north African and isre.a.li, it's Tunisian and only Tunisian! also shawarma never been from that pace (is"real")

Barcode scanner often fails; default portion sizes are off

For some users, barcodes and recognition work flawlessly

Yazio has many features that I expect for a food tracker app. Unlike FitnessPal, i like that this app helps me stay consistent. The worst part about this app is the user interface. The weight logging is just a counter, like a settings config, rather than a daily log form. When I enter a new food, the labels for servings is confusing. It always gets the metrics wrong every time and it wont let you

Great app, don't bother with premium. 90% of recipes you won't like and the barcodes tracking rarely works. Also, daily diamonds don't always work if you have a late breakfast, say after 9, when it claims it works from 6-noon.

Great food tracker, but buried with annoying gimmicks. Database is solid, barcode scanning works well, but daily streaks, AI recommendations, diamonds? I just want to log my food and close the app, not navigate a Mini-Game. Please add toggles to disable these "engagements" features. A minimal mode would make this 5 stars for users who want simplicity over gamification. The annoyances only motivate

Custom recipes and meals can't be edited and are hard to find

Creating a recipe with ingredients and automatic nutrition calculation is convenient

One of the best apps for tracking calories, many recipes and products available, but PLEASE let me synchronize it with mi fitness 🙏🙏

Please please please give me the option to skip the long questionnaire that has to be filled out every time I come back to the app after not using it often. It makes me dread opening the app, and it always asks weight based questions. Ive been using the app for years and it has all my recipes in it. Half the time I just wanna access my recipes. I also no longer track regularly, I just occasionally

Helps users lose weight and sustain a calorie deficit

The app makes it noticeably easier to maintain a deficit and shed weight; many users report specific numbers lost and long unbroken streaks

its been great and ive been using it daily for 150 days. lose around 9kg of weight since. all the functions are useful, intuitive and generally great. my only gripes is that the camera feature are weirdly zoomed and somehow the focus are all weird. i believe my phone have a great camera but somehow pics taken in yazio is always blurry and unfocused, this ends up causing the ai to confuse the food

terrible, cant set weight goal because its 9.5kg under "healthy bmi" when they dont know anything about me. also everything decent is locked behind a pay wall. bs app wouldnt recommend, would give negative stars if i could.

Awful ai Integration, constantly reminding you to buy the pro version to actually lose weight. Also can't stand how I just want to add my food and get a screen where I'm just expected to wait full 20 seconds to read their message about how hard it can be to lose weight. Get a different app, you deserve better.

Clean design and easy food entry

Attractive interface, smart search, photo logging, and barcode scanning — frequently praised as the best calorie counter on the market

its been great and ive been using it daily for 150 days. lose around 9kg of weight since. all the functions are useful, intuitive and generally great. my only gripes is that the camera feature are weirdly zoomed and somehow the focus are all weird. i believe my phone have a great camera but somehow pics taken in yazio is always blurry and unfocused, this ends up causing the ai to confuse the food

Good app but fasting is so confusing cause i fasted for 20 hours and wanted to fast for a bit more, but the timer started again so i lost my progress idk how to change it please make it easy to use 💗

easy to track meals with ai photo assist

What users hate

Photo recognition underestimates calories by a third

AI food recognition consistently logs 30–40% fewer calories than manual entry, misidentifies ingredients, and doesn't improve over time

They claim you can take a picture of your meal and it will accurately calculate the calorie profile and I tested it multiple times and it was consistently miscalculating the calories of the meal. For instance, I made chicken and pasta and it claimed it was only 200 calories when I precalculated it myself via scale and common information on packaging and the the actual caloric amount exceeded 300.

questions at first sign in are long and were mostly irrelevant to my goals. not being able to view the details of the day in the free version is EXTREMLY offputting, I understand that some features should remain behind a paywall, but not being able to see what you ate at the end of the day shouldnt be a paid feature, uninstalled

Edit: I now getting less pop ups. I think I could snooze them finally Way too many Pop-ups. The App could be so good for calorie tracking. It looks nice and is easy to use. But clicking through 5 Pop Ups everytime you track something is just so demotivating. I don't care about a streak, gems, a coach, yes I am committed, don't ask me everytime, just let me track my calories. And not even an option

Unskippable animations slow down basic food logging

Slow mascot and congratulation animations can't be dismissed, turning a quick meal log into a chore; users are asking for a disable toggle

Good appin general, not much flexibility if you're not Pro. But the one thing that will most likely make me unsuscribe from my Pro plan is the anoying animation of the yeti. Make it so the user can opt out of animations please!

Overall, the functionality is satisfactory, but the intrusive animations are annoying. I don't want to watch cartoons. I want to quickly enter food and close the application. Please add a button in the settings to disable everything in the interface that is not related to the core functionality.

Too many animations, and mascot blabla. It has no idea about the foods... Not learning. I mean I eat no butter but hummus and always thinks butter. It has no idea about the size of the portion... and like 80% it has no idea about the foods... waste of money

After a few days away, the app forces you to retake the whole survey

Skip a couple of days and the full survey reappears, even for paying subscribers — it feels like a punishment

forces you to answer a 100 questions and most being useless for creating a plan. I don't have time to answer hundreds of questions on surveys just let me type in my information and create a plan so I don't spend 20 minutes answering weird questions.

The app is useful for monitoring calories and macronutrients. On the other hand, it is very annoying that every time you don't use it for a few days, it forces you to answer a long string of stupid questions. And I use the paid app! PS: I understand that the questions can be useful. But having to answer them over and over again just because you haven't used the app for a few days makes no sense, e

Tried to come back to the app after having used it a few years back. So many core features from before are now paywalled. It is so disingenuous after having input so many local food products and recipes, which is a main contributor to your app's appeal, and now losing access to even more features despite the community-driven data generation. I have now switched to another meal tracker.

New dropdown interface made food logging slower

Replacing 'Recent / Frequent / Favorites' tabs with dropdowns added extra taps; logging lunch now takes noticeably longer

so bad

The recipe sharing is not working in every version and I don't understand how is this acceptable in an app for which I have to pay. Plus the design is worse after every update. Now tracking the foods is a chore. :( I cannot understand why should they change the UI that the users have to click more and more. Now we have to use dropdown menus instead of icons. Very annoying.

No weekly or monthly calorie and macro summaries

The app lacks basic reporting — weekly and monthly totals for calories and macros that competing apps provide as standard

using pro version app for almost a year. tried to keep up entering daily nutrition info. but app lacks basic reporting capabilities. for instance it is impossible to get weekly or monthly reports of nutrition listing. food database is full of junk data .. sorry to say that , this app is totally useless.

Edit: If you buy buy from the website DO NOT PAY through google, Google waives your right of withdrawl within the EU! The app has a good UI but its lacking some data views like total weekly calories, or a monthly view like in LooseIt. For 84Eur (twice the price of other apps) it's dissapointing. The AI gets 2/3 of the ingredients wrong, I always just rewrite the text to tell it what I'm eating, wh

No way to export your food diary or data

There's no diary export via file or third-party app integration; months of data feel locked in, impossible to share with a doctor or dietitian

no export option or link with other apps to take my data out

Fun App but unfortunately AI is so far off! If comparing nutrients from AI pictures with manually adding items in Yazio OR if comparing with results from just Gemini or Chatty you can find Yazio almost always being 1/3 under. So no good if relying on the app for various reasons. Cancelled subscription after just 2 weeks... 35€ down the drain 😟

I bought a Pro license and generally like the app, but the lack of an option to access my data for further analysis, whether through an API or a file export, is really disappointing. Not having this feature is becoming a deal-breaker, and I would not renew my paid license without it. For now, I’m giving it 2 stars; once this feature is added, I’ll change it to 5 stars immediately.

Steps and activity from wearables get counted twice, inflating calorie budget

When paired with a fitness tracker, steps and workouts are double-counted, inflating the daily allowance by up to 1,000 kcal — a real risk for people trying to lose weight

I would love it if it actually synced to Google health. Or whatever Fitbit's called now. Spent almost two hours and still won't work. Only read permissions are showing for connect (I have to have two separate apps to try to handle a connection to the third app?!), not write ones. Edit: Updated because if someone has said they were trying something for almost two hours, what are the odds they HAVEN

Great! Can calculate all kind of food and connect with your smartwatch by healthconnect. Calories count is very accurated AI would have to edit nutrition and amont.

Fasting timer is inflexible and doesn't allow editing past sessions

You can't extend a fast or set a custom start/end time; the timer cuts off progress on its own, and past entries can't be corrected

Good app but fasting is so confusing cause i fasted for 20 hours and wanted to fast for a bit more, but the timer started again so i lost my progress idk how to change it please make it easy to use 💗

somewhat good to count calories. but the fasting tracker is the dumbest thing I've come across in a long time. instead of letting us select when it starts and when it ends all the time, it takes the time/type of fasting to a T and ends your fasting for you. also, you can't backtrack it to edit past information which is also pretty damn stupid. and that's on the paid plan. won't be paying for it ag

Annoying pop ups all the time.. after adding any meal. Makes this app unusable. The popup brags about how fast I added the meal... And then blocks me from adding more. Which of makes it slow..🤷🤷🤦 Trying to find an alternative Your banners and pop-ups, that you designed for motivation are deeply and extremely demotivating, I gave this app another go.. And now I'm considering abandoning my subscr

Users want fiber, caffeine, and more micronutrient tracking

Fiber and caffeine tracking are missing; photo recognition only returns calories and macros, with no micronutrient breakdown

good app but my complaint is that i cant count my caffeine intake

I like the apps. I even pay for the premium because of it. It also has my country food options in there. It's not perfect, but good enough, I guess. I just hope you add a fibre bar to the main screen as well, like protein, fat, and carbs.

No allergy settings or ingredient exclusions in recipes

There's no way to flag allergies or intolerances, exclude ingredients from suggestions, or configure gluten-free mode — the app recommends nuts even when a nut allergy is set

No diet intolerance settings? Really? There are, apparently, ways to exclude foods but only in the paid version not the free tier and since I couldn't test the function it's a no go. However that does imply that the excluded foods would have to be entered individually and that would be unnecessarily laborious so I'm out.

Stuck with a 1-year sub, but 2 weeks in there are major pitfalls. First, you can't exclude specific foods/allergies so they don't show up in recipes at all. The recipe selection is also poor. Second, the AI picture tool is cool but guesses calories based on a few ingredients, causing you to under-eat or over-eat. Neither is good. Finally, the feedback URL is broken, and giving a discount to a frie

I was excited to use your app until it got to dietary restrictions. You don't have gluten-free 😭

Calorie goal is rigid: one target for all days, no calorie cycling

Goal changes apply to every day at once; separate limits for training vs. rest days and custom macro ratios aren't supported; weight goals can be blocked by BMI caps

terrible, cant set weight goal because its 9.5kg under "healthy bmi" when they dont know anything about me. also everything decent is locked behind a pay wall. bs app wouldnt recommend, would give negative stars if i could.

I like the app a lot, and currently pay for the pro version. It's quick and easy to use. I just really wish there was a way to manually set each day's calorie goal. If I change my calorie goal, it applies it to all existing days. As someone who uses calorie cycling, this means I have a lot more red days than I should. I could just ignore the calorie goal and cycle how I want, but that kind of defe

Paying user, the app fundamentally does its job, database top. But: -the app should automatically update the calorie goal weekly with the trend of the logged weight and other metrics (would be a much better use of the AI, instead of a very bad tracker) -the "deactivate tips for 2 weeks" is here finally, but the UI is annoying, I have to click "I'm committed" every single time I log in, even on the

Preachy tips are triggering for users with eating disorders

Advice, streaks, and food-choice commentary feel judgmental and induce guilt; for a portion of users these patterns are an active eating-disorder trigger

How to delete this stupid insights feature? It is incrediably rude and mean. This is disgusting. For my own money this feature is insulting me every day. It is insulting!

I am using this app for years, but I don't like the new version. The advice from a mascot to change foods I like to something healthier sends me straight to my ed days. Do you know what a healthy diet is? It's eating everything in moderation without restrictions and counting your calories to stay in deficit. That's what your app is designed for! Mind you, I'm on your pro plan, and you could've at

i dont like that it makes me feel guilty if I havent logged for a couple of days. what changed it asks. I want to log when I can...even 4 days a week will see where Im failing. each time it starts from scratch. also the ai is not great.
