   Glitchy. I spent a lot of money on this app. Always freezes, lags, stops working. What a waste. Previous, simpler versions were way better. By trying to add features and redesign it, the developers have ruined what was a very helpful app.

   Money hungry debutantes. Everything requests you pay on this app. Whole time I can just google it for free. What’s the big idea here Oxford?

   Can’t use for free anymore?. I now have a prompt to pay for use, and there’s no way to get past it. Perhaps this is a glitch, but I have uninstalled and reinstalled. There are too many other dictionaries to give me basic services. Too bad, Oxford, you were a good friend.

   Insidious Charge. I don’t write reviews very often, however, I’ve made an exception for this app. I simply wanted to have a good (yet free) resource to look-up/discover new words. For this reason, I downloaded this app. Straight away, I looked up a few words and was pleased with this resource/app. To my surprise, this morning I received a notice of a $39.99 charge on a credit card to which I have no idea how this app got access!?…(I rarely use this credit card.) As far as I can surmise, this app is running a scam! Unfortunately, downloading this app has been a huge disappointment. I advise anyone to avoid this app.

   Shallow translations. Im trying to read books and translate words im unfamiliar with to Portuguese ( my native language) and i thought this would give me the definition in Portuguese as well but no… it just translates ??? Might as well use google and to pay for this.

   No plurals?!. The Oxford Italian Dictionary does NOT consistently provide the plural form for most nouns. E.g., if you enter "sisters" it returns no results in Italian. It will offer sorella for sister, but doesn't inform the user of sorelle for sisters. How can it fail to provide the plural for nouns and call itself a dictionary? Or are plurals an extra subscription??

    Ads? On a paid app?. Today I got shown a really obnoxious ad in the app for the first time. If this were a free app I would just delete it, but I actually paid $20 for this. So incredibly insulting. I cannot believe the gall of the developers of this app to charge top dollar for it, AND to chuck obnoxious full screen ads in my face when I need to use it. Shame on you!

    Terrible. On the way to opening the app, to get to the Dictionary itself there is a curated series of questions to determine how this Dictionary will be used.It’s an attempt to curate my content. I have to skip over these things because I don’t want curated content. When you finally open the app and get to the Dictionary itself the ads in the bottom slow down my experience. Advertisements pop up. Obviously I do not want to pay for a Dictionary, an annual subscription. What I do want is open free education. And not to see advertisements for Meta. That alone will forever deter me from ever purchasing a subscription. Needless to say I will be deleting this app. Meta-can support you. Is it any wonder of the world is not getting any smarter?

    Not the Oxford University Press. Opening this app without a subscription now results in a full-screen ad, many of which are bizarrely sexual for a dictionary app. The others are obvious scams, e.g., “click this button to prevent your iPhone from overheating.”

    Wow, not in a good way.. 1. Add a one time LIFETIME purchase option. 2. Add SOUND. (Not sure why this has to be stated for a DIGITAL app in this technological age in the current year of 2026; this should be standard, especially for the current inflated price point. ) I had higher hopes for this one, given its far more recent update. I tried the trial and downloaded the Greek dictionary…only to discover it does NOT even have pronunciation included. I can not imagine what the inflated $39.99 a year SUBSCRIPTION is for, if this digital version offers no sound. I might as well get a paper copy of this dictionary and skip the subscription all together. It’s truly unbelievable.

    No Etymology. I care less about definitions than the history of words. I set up a trial and as part of the onboarding flow it asks you what three things you are interested in to funnel you towards a subscription. My first one was etymology. Not a single entry had anything about word origin in any of the English dictionaries. I reached out to support and… crickets. It may be great if you just need a dictionary and a thesaurus but even the sub title on the app entry is misleading.

    Pronunciation. When I got the dictionary, I was able to listen to the pronunciation of every word. Now, when I click on the pronunciation, I don’t have access to it anymore. Instead, a new screen appears that shows my plan and asks me if I want to upgrade to another plan. It’s so unfair. I feel I have been robbed of something I already paid for. Very disappointing!

    Use Wiktionary - This app’s publisher stole my IAP. Yet another situation where a premium was payed for theoretically permanent premium access, revoked as soon as it was less convenient and profitable for the dev or publisher. They do have a ~$250 yearly access pass though, compared to my previous ~$10 purchase. Update, based on developer's response: no. Your solution, which I'd already tried, did not work, likely due to the single-purchase option being gone.

    Ridiculous slop. I downloaded this because after 15 years of paying for the other dictionary to have ads removed in an account, webster started scamming people by removing accounts so that you can’t even upgrade to have ads and stuff like thesaurus or other stuff even after you paid for it. So I downloaded this in hopes that maybe it would be something similar but this ridiculous app is even more expensive with a yearly subscription on top of it and doesn’t even look as good. You pigs should be ashamed of yourself

    Subscription slop. Paying to use the thesaurus is peak coin clipping behavior, you are making me pay to access knowledge, also the ads feel like they’re from the sketchiest website in 2013 Update — byebye. You are OXFORD. Haven’t you been around for nearly a thousand years, why do you need my money for me to access elementary-level knowledge? Why does an ostensible institution like OXFORD feel a need to taint it’s outward facing reputation with shawty ads for virtual slot machines and wholesale plastic dropshipped goods? No I went and got a FREE dictionary and thesaurus on my phone because OXFORD lost their dignity after a millennium.

    Couldn’t define the first word I looked up. This dictionary, which I expected to be first rate, couldn’t define the first word I looked up: “proparoxytone”. Yes, it’s an unusual word, but that’s what a complete dictionary is for! I wasted $9.99.

    Paid a ton and still filed with ads!!!!. I’ve paid full price for the paid version of this app and now every couple of definitions that pops up add that cannot be skipped. Totally ruins the experience and what I think of the Oxford.

    Not the full OED. When I paid for this, I thought it would be the full Oxford English dictionary so I could do research with it. This version is no different than Miriam Webster. And the word of the day is usually something of a third grade reading level, it should be something that challenges you and expands your vocabulary. It’s always something my numbingly simple.

    Fantastic Dictionary / Terrible App. I’m so sick of this app. I love the Oxford Dictionary. I own the hardbound 2-volume “Shorter Oxford English Dictionary” that costs $150. But this app constantly forces me to download the dictionary again, then takes forever to do so. I want to be able to use this whether I’m connected to the internet or not and it simply is not reliable. One star. Garbage app for what is, in print, the best dictionary available.

    OED Hindi is Useless. It doesn’t translate from Hindi to English, just English to Hindi. App is difficult to navigate.

    Ads make the app just about useless. I fully understand needing ads for revenue on free versions, but this is too much. To have ads that force you to watch for a certain amount of time before you can exit, and have them more often than every 40 seconds, makes it nearly impossible to use the app. Other dictionaries also provide deeper analysis of words and varied definitions Oxford is so reputable, too, so it’s very disappointing.
