   New update is horrendous. The original app wasn’t flashy, but reliable and fairly intuitive. The newest update has been a cluster from the beginning. It is incredibly slow, choppy, nothing is loading.

   Smart Pen Doesn’t Work. I can no longer use my pen. It says it’s “no longer supported”. There was nothing wrong with my pen, it worked fine. Now I have to be a new for for $200(+) or I can No longer use my system. There should have been a notification that said to not update the app or your older pen won’t work. This feels like a scam to get me to pay for a new pen.

   YOU CANNOT ACCESS YOUR NOTEBOOKS IF YOU DON’T USE THEIR CLOUD SERVICES. The original app was never great but it worked and I could keep my content locally without using their cloud services. This new 3.0 major update forces you to upload all of your old notes to the cloud. After updating the app, they give you an option to export your old notebooks to an offline format (probably pdf) but that option only comes up once. If you skip that export option (which I did to better understand my options later in the legacy notebook migration flow), you’re basically screwed; you are forced to upload all your content to their cloud. If you don’t upload your content to their cloud, they lock you out of YOUR notebooks. IF YOU DON’T USE THEIR CLOUD SERVICE, YOU CANNOT ACCESS YOUR NOTEBOOKS. In summary: - It costs over $200 USD for their criminally mediocre “smart” pen - NO OFFLINE OPTION: In order to use Moleskin’s “smart” notebook system, you are forced to upload your content to their cloud services. - This is an egregious, user-hostile change to this moleskin “smart” ecosystem. I’ll admit the physical Moleskin notebooks are wonderful. Great products. But the “smart”/digital side of the ecosystem is a scam. We, the users are now the product. They’re going to milk us for our data and we’ll inevitably find out about a massive data breach at some point. Do yourself a favor and avoid Moleskin’s “smart” products. I feel anything but smart for getting so invested in their garbage.

   Suddenly the new app forces to create and account and send my private notes on their cloud. It looks like they decided to introduce AI features nobody asked for and charge a subscription fee for that. So, they give customers no option to keep the setup they had before: with no account and everything stored locally.

   Avoid. It was an expensive birthday gift almost a year ago, and it never functioned as intended. I have been waiting for the promised update since, and I am losing hope at this point.

   Cannot create account. They’re still selling this pen even though it is impossible to create an account on Moleskine at the moment. People have been reporting this for the last two weeks so this is not some temporary outage. Ridiculous!

   Vaporware. Update OCT 22 2025 I can’t express my disappointment enough. There was a silent decision to disable sync in Jan 2025 while working on a new improved version. So far I’ve been given 4 release dates. June of 25, Sept of 25, Oct of 25, and now in a response to someone else’s comments, Nov of 25. 10 months without sync to their server, and no end in site. I purchased this and one of the key features was sync between my iPhone and iPad. I paid a premium price for what I assumed was a premium device and service. What a let down. UPDATE July 3 2025 I’ve had to remove some stars. Several months ago, my sync stoped working. I was told at the time that they were working on a new version, and turned off the sync servers to get ready for the new product, and it would be ready “hopefully by June” I’m disappointed that users weren’t notified that sync would be disabled for an extended time, and that there is no updated timeline for the new version. I understand there are often delays in software development, but the overall lack of communication leaves a lot to be desired. Especially when cross device sync was a key feature Moleskine announced for this product. **original review** I purchased a competitor’s product last summer. I had an issue and contacted support, and no response to multiple inquiries over a couple of weeks time. I decided to purchase the Moleskine Smart system as a smart notebook is helpful in my work, and it lives up to its promise. I did have a minor issue which I’ve reported to their support, and got a timely and helpful response. I wish I bought this system in the first place.

   It’s official. This app is no longer being supported.. I’ve been following this application closely since May. From my personal experience, reading others feedback, and the lack of promised updates I believe this app is no longer being supported. I’m sure I’m going to get some auto response stating that I should use their internal feedback/support system, which gets nowhere. It’s a shame, someone sold Moleskin a dream that they can’t complete. On to the next physical>digital note taking system.

    When it’s good it is very good. When it’s bad it is very bad.. I love writing and drawing with the pen when it is working smoothly. However it keeps corrupting the data in the pen and setting g the date to December 31 1969. Nothing new gets stored. With much struggle I managed to get it to recognize the correct date ( reinstall, start a new physical notebook) but after a period of time it corrupted again. I can’t rely on it. I am looking for a better solution. While I use Windows computers, this behavior is entirely on the pen and an iPhone.

    Apple Pencil? Nope. The only way you can use their app is if you buy their pen. Apple has a pencil. It should be able to work with this app, but nope. They don’t get any money from the Apple Pencil so too bad. Pointless, unless you want ANOTHER fancy, expensive stylus. Can’t even use your finger! Ripoff

    Crashes & Support Doesn’t Respond. Unfortunately, this app has been crashing for the last three months (May-July 2025). When I open the app, and it attempts to sync with my Smart pen, the app crashes. I have counted no less than 16 crashes, and there have been no substantive updates to the app in at least one year. I have reached out to Moleskine Smart support five times (and sent crash logs), and I have only received automated responses, no assistance. Additionally, there is no community support site, so an almost $300 Smart system has been rendered useless.

    Unbelievably Frustrating App. I love the notebooks but wow the app is so bad. None of the connectivity works. I just lost all my journals because it will not sign into anything. Luckily there wasn’t much in the journals but still very annoying. It makes me not want to use the system.

    Pointless with no backup. 6/5/2025 EDIT: I just received a response from Moleskine saying the app had backup and cross-device functionality and I just checked it. Neither of those features work on the app. Moleskines correspondence to me on 4/23/2025: Dear Garrett, Thank you for contacting Moleskine. With regard to your inquiry, the Notes App is currently unavailable to log-ins/sync across devices. At the moment, our servers are updating in preparation for the launch of the new Notes App, which will be much more efficient and supported by Artificial Intelligence. Once the new version of the app is available, you are able to access your account once again. Please note that this is temporary, and you will receive an update once the Notes App is ready for use.     No Working Too Much Money for No Support. Weak / pathetic documentation Defective device Support is nearly nonexistent The pen won’t power on. The only support option is to send them an email and they will respond in 1 or 2 business days.

    Don’t do the update!. Download the 1.0 version from the website. The latest update crashes when trying to select individual pages. I have followed the FAQ page and contacted customer support, but there has been no solution.

    Needs Updates. Buggy, crashes constantly, and missing features. This app needs updates and there has been nothing from Moleskine in the better part of a year. Ridiculous for the cost of $280 for their smart writing set.

    eventually ok. not a great experience getting started: even charging the Pen was a challenge (using a gender adapter, waiting tor a red light, then removing the adapter....); logged into notes app on android w/o problems; on my ipad I could not log in (error message "unauthorized). eventually after 10 attempts it worked (why?). when I press the mail icon in the smart book, Outlook opens up with a pdf in the subject line but w/o the actual attachement...need to send the pdf from within the app. come on, that is not great! you had years to finetune the app and the whole user experience! update: yesterday added my first notebook on my iPad. Today, continued writing in the Android app. but nothing syncs (Logged into the same Moleskin account on both devices, also using the same OneDrive sync/backup, pressed sync several times on both devices). frustrating experience!

    User unfriendly - doesn’t sync. It works fine if you only use it on one device - iPhone or iPad. But the two don’t sync, so u can’t share the notebooks across them. The instructions and FAQs are useless. There’s no support number to call. You have to send an email. I still haven’t heard from Customer Service

    Only works intermittently. The hardware and the app are very unreliable. I’ve stopped using it, it would convert my handwriting with only about 80% accuracy. This meant that I spent more time fixing typos than it would’ve taken to just type the original. The other problem is that the pen introduces random lines streaking across the page, which mess up the optical character, recognition, and ruin any drawings you make. A sidenote about the agenda – I had to stop using this because all events were being created in European time zones – I had to go in and edit every event after it was createdto put it on Eastern standard time. There is no way to configure a default time zone for the hardware/agenda notebook. I’m a fan of other apps from this company, and of their paper notebooks, but the smart notebook was a dud.

    Calendar Pairing Not Working. Received this as a Christmas gift from my wife. I was extremely excited as I love the Smartplanner’s layout. The app does not allow me to connect to ANY calendar! I sent two emails to customer service and received no reply. Waste of money.

    DO NOT BUY. App crashes as soon as you connect a pen to it. Effectively making the pen and notebook like any other. Read the other poor reviews. From the blanket statements “please contact us, we’d love to help you!” Even on the review ripping their customer service apart. This company is clearly pumping out junk products and scooping in profits. Stay away from this company!
