Travel planning apps

The travel planning market is broken into narrow functional layers, and each layer is won by exactly one tool. The leader by real score here is : it covers a very specific need of airline employees and doesn't try to be universal. Next come and , which also do one thing well: the first assembles bookings from email without manual entry, the second tracks the budget right at the point of spending. The big aggregators , Skyscanner, , , and occupy the bottom third of the table, and all of them are either inflated or in the doubt zone: for each, the gap between the store rating and the text average exceeds a full point. The real window for a founder is not breadth of coverage but reliability in executing one scenario: a traveler who knows what they want to do is forced today to juggle three or four apps and never gets confidence that the data is current.

Market overview

The leader on real quality is , but its market is niche and closed: airline employees on standby tickets. Among universal tools the leader is  on the strength of the only truly working mechanic: a forwarded booking email turns into a ready itinerary with no manual entry, and users with 10 to 15 years of history value it. The next tier is  and : both are strong at route visualization and collecting bookings but fall short on notification reliability and sync. The mass aggregators , , and Skyscanner dominate audience reach, but their real scores sit well below the storefront ones, which points to a structural weakness in execution at high transaction volume.

The typical mistake of the big players: turning the app into a showcase of partner offers before it solves the user's basic task. removed the results list, leaving only the map, and lost city navigation. built its entire value offer on price forecasts that miss on the high side more than occasionally. found a good "anywhere" mechanic but immediately undermines trust with redirects to dubious aggregators with no reputation checks. Viator and know how to sell tours, but at any force majeure the platform steps aside and dumps the customer on the operator directly. The pattern is one: companies optimize the booking funnel, not the moment the trip is executed. And it's exactly at the moment of execution that the user is left alone.

Channels visible right in the reviews: people say themselves how they found the app and why they installed it. This is the niche's distribution.

Store search for a specific trip6

The install happens once the trip is on the calendar: someone searches for a Disneyland countdown, an RV route planner, or an expense tracker. The queries are razor-thin, and the winner is the app named and described in the language of the task.

I first saw this app when I was looking for an app to tell me how long till my Disney trip so I downloaded it and would check it every day

I’ve spent a lot of time searching for a trip planner, this one is beyond my expectations.

The travel agent puts the client on the app4

Some users never chose the app at all: the travel agent set it up, and the client is stuck living in it even when they want to edit the trip themselves. For a new product it's a ready-made B2B2C channel: sell to the agents and they bring the users.

I probably wouldn’t use this app if it was not what my agent uses.

Unfortunately as a customer I cannot add any stuff I want. I understand that I should be able to edit stuff put in by my travel agent

Reddit as the pre-payment check2

Before booking and paying, people go read Reddit, and that's also where they find warnings about sketchy services. In a niche with hundreds of dollars on the line, forum reputation decides more than ads.

Wish I had seen all the cautionary tales on Reddit. Never purchase from Flighthub!

Recommendations: acquaintances and social media2

Isolated but lively signals: an entrepreneur friend praises the app, or it gets plugged hard on social media. People mass-harvest trip ideas from reels, so native posts in travel content land exactly at the planning moment.

I thought I would give this a try after seeing it pushed on social media.

Review-based rating

StaffTraveler4.9 in store · rating aligns · 6,317 ratings79our scoreFor airline employees flying non-rev, the app solves a real problem: seeing load on a partner carrier's flight, which previously required a phone call. A recent update hurt data entry, but the platform's value remains high.
Strong

Getting live load data from colleagues at another airline just minutes before boarding.

Weak

Data reliability depends on user honesty. Fraudulent entries showing zero load do occur.

For whom

Airline staff planning non-rev travel on other carriers' flights

Tripmasters4.9 in store · some mismatch · 3,204 ratings72our scoreA companion app for Tripmasters clients that handles offline trip details and flight reminders well. Some users report timeouts in the Guide section and slow booking sync, but most find it useful on the road.
Strong

Offline itinerary and schedule available without internet, which matters abroad and in the subway.

Weak

The guide section freezes periodically, and booking changes do not always sync automatically.

For whom

Tripmasters clients who want all tour details at their fingertips offline

TripIt: Travel Planner4.8 in store · rating aligns · 304,750 ratings67our scoreTripIt excels at one thing: pulling bookings from confirmation emails into a single itinerary without manual input. Long-term fans value years of trip history. The weakness is that email parsing breaks periodically, and some features like seat assignments and calendar export are unreliable.
Strong

Forward a booking confirmation and get a complete itinerary with no manual steps.

Weak

Airline email import breaks or throws an error at the worst times, exactly when you need it on the road.

For whom

Frequent business travelers and anyone with multi-segment itineraries

Source reviews and topics →
TravelSpend: Travel Budget App4.8 in store · rating aligns · 2,002 ratings65our scoreThe best expense tracker in its category: simple entry, automatic currency conversion, and CSV export. Currency rates are not always current, and the mobile format limits usefulness in complex scenarios like cruises.
Strong

Track spending right at the point of purchase, with instant conversion to your home currency.

Weak

No way to duplicate recurring expense entries, which makes tracking long trips tedious.

For whom

Travelers who want budget control without complex spreadsheets

Source reviews and topics →
Visit A City4.8 in store · rating aligns · 14,593 ratings63our scoreOne of the best apps for routing sightseeing stops: it builds an optimal visit order based on time and distance. The 10-day limit and inability to add arbitrary addresses (only recognized places) restrict use cases.
Strong

Automatically arranges attractions into an efficient route with no unnecessary backtracking.

Weak

You cannot set an arbitrary starting point like an Airbnb address or an unrecognized location.

For whom

Tourists who want to cover the maximum number of sights in a day

Source reviews and topics →
Marriott Bonvoy: Book Hotels4.9 in store · rating aligns · 2,786,080 ratings62our scoreMarriott's brand app for searching and booking hotels with the Bonvoy loyalty program. Navigation is logical and booking is easy, but the digital key is unreliable and points can take up to a week to post.
Strong

The full trip management cycle in one place: search, booking, points tracking, and mobile check-in.

Weak

The digital key often fails at the door, and booking data diverges between the mobile app and the website.

For whom

Regular Marriott guests with accumulated Bonvoy points

Source reviews and topics →
momondo: Flights, Hotels, Cars4.9 in store · rating aligns · 39,170 ratings62our scoreMomondo offers one of the best search interfaces in the segment: powerful filters, an explore-anywhere feature, and flexible date selection that genuinely work. The core problem is a product one: prices shown in search and prices at the provider often differ, and some listed providers turn out to be sketchy aggregators.
Strong

The explore-anywhere feature with date and budget filters helps find destinations you had not considered.

Weak

Redirects to third-party sites without reputation checks undermine trust in the listings.

For whom

Flexible travelers who find the best window and route first, then book directly

Source reviews and topics →
Wanderlog - Travel Planner4.9 in store · rating aligns · 32,927 ratings62our scoreWanderlog is strong for proximity-based route planning and map visualization, which genuinely saves time in a city. Booking import via email is unreliable, and UI updates sometimes remove useful features.
Strong

Route planning with distance awareness between stops, so you are not zigzagging across the city.

Weak

Email booking import is unstable, and venue opening hours sometimes differ from reality.

For whom

Detail-oriented planners who want a logical city route mapped out in advance
