FarOut, formerly Guthook, is indispensable on thru-hikes like the Appalachian Trail for its water points, bear and campsite markers, and fresh comments from people who just passed, plus you buy maps once with no subscription. It breaks right where it matters most, the app freezes and crashes on multi-day trips, the offline map sometimes won't open without signal, and an update can lose trail sections you already bought.

I assumed I could access the downloaded map when I had no signal, but evidently not. Am grateful my buddy had Garmin app.
Being able to identify water points is an absolute game changer.
Farout added an ai feature that categorizes and deletes comments automatically and now years of useful comments are just gone, do better farout
Nobody posts updates anymore or Far Out doesn’t allow them. In either case, not having real time posts from hikers is a significant problem with this app
