BlackGentry: Black Dating App

TERRIBLE. This is easily one of the most disappointing dating apps I’ve tried. The platform promotes itself as having a highly selective and rigorous vetting process, but my experience suggests otherwise. The quality of profiles on the app does not reflect the premium image the company markets. Many profiles featured unclear or low-quality photos, which I understood would not meet the platform’s stated standards. Several profiles appeared incomplete or lacked the level of effort one would expect from a supposedly exclusive community. I also came across reviews suggesting that promotional images may create the impression that the app attracts exceptionally high-caliber singles. Based on my experience, the actual user base did not align with those expectations. Fortunately, I did not pay for a subscription. Given the gap between the app’s marketing and my experience using it, I would not recommend this platform and would encourage others to explore alternative dating apps before spending their time or money here.

Don’t bother. Signed up months ago sat in a waiting list for months

This a scam. All the connections are far away. They make pay and subscribe. It is a waste of time and money

Actual likes are behind paywall. You’ll never actually be shown those who like you lol they just let them accumulate if they’re even real and want you to eventually pay to see them. Usually also low quality matches so not worth your time or money.

Quantity over Quality. They need to do better job of vetting profiles. The vast majority of men on there are hideous. It’s supposed to promote a different community of black people but the vast majority on there look poor & have bios littered with typos.

Ambitious?. I signed up thinking the users would be elevated, ambitious… the cream of the crop, if you will. Absolutely not. There is no way these men went through any sort of vetting process. That, or the standards were much too low for men. I had over 300 likes and didn’t run into a single person of interest. Their profile lacked effort and the pictures didn’t imply that they were hand picked by the app’s standards.

Sucks. They keep logging you out. The quality of men suck. It’s the same on any other site this one just doesn’t give many matches. Don’t like it

Trash. Woke up to an unauthorized declined transaction!! Membership was cancelled a month prior so there wasn’t an active recurring payment!!

Horrible !. I paid my money for a month of service and there is literally no one to swipe on. I’ve even extended my location. Nothing. I made sure the app was updated. Still nothing. Save your money do not pay. I’m contacting my bank next. This is deplorable.

Unusable Service and Poor Customer Support. Charged for a subscription I couldn’t access. I received a billing email and tried to log in to cancel, but there is no clear login method tied to the billing email. Attempting to log in only created new accounts, so I had to contact support just to cancel a service I wasn’t even able to use. Instead of helping resolve the access issue, support gave inconsistent explanations about how the account was created and denied a refund. The overall experience felt disorganized, dismissive, and unnecessarily difficult for a paid service.

BG sucks. Sucks.

Absolute garbage. I joined this app signed up and did all the profile creation and then a week later my profile was gone. No matter how many times I tried to re-log on they prompted me to create a new profile. On top of that, they wanted me to redo the photo verification and everything. Absolutely incompetent developers.

Got Scammed in the App. I got scammed for my subscription, I subscribed for a month and after after like 5 days the subscription wasn’t working anymore, I have contacted consumer service several days for a week now but no response so I guess there’s a scam in the subscription part of this app.

Terrible. Outrageously priced, very limited features. No decent algorithm to optimize people who have already liked you. At least some dating apps recommend the profile that liked you sooner instead of having to go through 10000 swipes

Honest opinion. My review is based on the app functionality. Your preference isn’t used to removed options outside of that other than age. I continue to see people 250 plus miles when my preference max is 50. Additionally, this app repeatedly recycles individuals you’ve dismissed. The selection isn’t any fault of the app, It’s life.

No Luck for me. App is cool, concept is average, intent is there, design is standard. I think its a good place to connect. But for $35 a month, I don’t see a smart investment to unlock who likes you. Users especially us guys should be able to see the latest 10 a month for free and premium pay to unlock all features plus a profile push for 7 days automatically. Otherwise, its good swipe app. I haven’t had any luck in 6 months but i hope you do.

I should have read the reviews. The app favors men. Women are the main ones who will have to pay the price tag because men will 100% just go through pictures and swipe right on a hundred women a day, while women will prefer to match with who likes them. The $35 a month price is not worth what you’re getting. It’s the same quality of people on the free app with very few exceptions. I appreciate that BG takes the initiative to make sure catfishing is not a problem but there’s no incentive to make sure these are actual professionals other than a badge on the profile, which most people don’t have. For $35 a month it should be required. Why on earth would I pay that much just to swipe through with the same bums and aggressive men I could swipe through on FB Dating? Make it make sense. Why are men allowed to answer their profile questions with a single “.” and nothing else? It’s a waste of my time and money. Their “report user” feature DOES NOT WORK. I had a match who pretended to be a corporate lawyer and tried to convince me to get on a paid flight to see him in Louisiana. He had a fake website and everything set up. When I tried to look him up, he was using a real lawyers name, but completely different pictures. When I asked what his bar number was, he freaked out on me and gave excuses then offered to WhatsApp video me from his office. The website of the real lawyer (a white man) was a completely different website than what this guy (a black man) sent me. Not only is that weird and illegal, it’s dangerous. I tried to report the user but the button does not work. I tapped on it and the screen would flicker but no extra screens or direct chats to support popped up, but the block button worked with no issues. This user doesn’t need to just be blocked, he needs to be REPORTED. The app also misses basic chatting features, like the ability to send voice messages for people who would rather not text all the time. I feel like I wasted my money. There are free apps, with more features and a smoother UI than this one. It just misses so marks in the week that I’ve had it. Another downside is I already know Apple will not approve a prorated refund, so I’m going to have to contact support (if I even can) to see what they say. I guess single month subscriptions is how they make their money because I can’t see anyone paying beyond the initial month just to have the same experience (or a lesser one) that you could have for free.

What’s the wait list. I just wanted an update on me being on the waitlist. I’ve been waiting to be approved for a little over a month now ? Personally I rather you just tell me I’m not excepted.

Worst dating app. Worst dating app I know of. Where you never get matches. All they want is that you pay for subscription.

WORST DATING APP. Can’t delete your account unless you pay & won’t let you remove pics either

Waitlist issue. I have been on your waitlist for over 2 weeks now. I know you doing this to make sure you keep us safe but please you need to look into it faster.

Login issue. This app won’t let you login your account once you logged out. I decided to take a break and logged out my account and it doesn’t let me login anymore since then

Scam. This app is a scam i paid for the monthly subscription and received no likes no matches everybody was far away the app. Is trash

Subscription tomfoolery. App is basic and is basically a copy of BLK. However my 1 star review is based upon the subscription cancellation process. On all apple iPhone applications you can cancel from your Apple ID. However this was not the case here. You have to cancel in the app itself. Which is hidden in the settings menu. This is clearly a try at misdirection. Based on this alone I will never use this app again. I was charged again when I had clearly cancelled.

Can’t open account. Tried opening account and app will not let me. Just says I’m blocked but I haven’t done anything to be blocked!! Also can’t get help from app Please advise the violation. Thank you

Paywall. You’ll get likes and recognition but you’ll never match them unless you pay. These prices are ridiculous for the features.

Too Many Fake Accounts!. Way too many fake accounts. It is obvious that companies are stealing people’s pictures off of the internet, TikTok, and Instagram to make you think so many people are on their app. This is the norm with almost every popular dating app available. Stay away from accounts that don’t complete there bio information. Most of them just have pictures only on their profile and that’s it. Also, accounts that have no idea how to use punctuation correctly, and the profiles with photos that are not clear, look distorted, or are quick screenshots that are stolen off the internet or apps. Some of these fools don’t even take the time to crop the photo’s so you will think their photos are real. I hate dating apps because of this nonsense. 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️😂 I thought this app was photo verified and exclusive. Not! Finally, get ready to view genders you are not interested in periodically as well. 🧐

nah... Out of all the apps I’ve ever been on , this is the worst. Their advertising does not match the quality of the people on the app. It’s overpriced with a very outdated interface. I really wanted to support but def a waste of money. I canceled before the end of my subscription.

Endemic of Modern Dating. This may not be an app wise issue but rather a structural issue. My profile was very, very weird - but I was very open minded and sent countless likes and thoughtful messages. I am considered attractive/of value and posted good photos and was specific - eg: I did everything right. The response rate I got was 1 convo that was quickly ghosted. The dudes and girls are high quality, I - nor anyone - should have a problem finding someone, regardless of “weirdness” - which is by itself subjective. TL;DR: I’m an interesting, and good dude man. Not a lot of love shown to interesting dudes /gals these days. This isn’t “incel” talk - this is the reality of dating. App was phenomenal though.

Account being banned. So I have only had this app for about a week and got banned for no reason. I’m polyamorous looking for potential I should be able to use any dating app with no issue especially if I don’t have anything explicit only my profile

Not the curated intentional experience advertised. I joined BlackGentry because it markets itself as a selective, members-only dating app for intentional and ambitious singles. Based on that messaging, I upgraded to VIP expecting a higher standard of profile quality and curation. Unfortunately, my experience did not reflect what the platform advertises. A large portion of the profiles I was shown were incomplete, had no questions answered, unrealistic names, or had photos that did not clearly show the person. Many profiles did not demonstrate the level of intentionality or professionalism that BlackGentry promotes as its core differentiator. In practice, the experience felt no different from general dating apps like BLK or Tinder. My disappointment is not about finding matches or guaranteed results. It is about profile quality and standards. If the app claims curated onboarding, meeting community standards, and selective approval, those standards should be visible in the profiles being approved and shown, even on the free tier. Additionally, despite setting strict filters for distance and age, I consistently received likes from users well outside my preferences, including people in other states and significantly older. While VIP removes swipe limits, unlimited access does not add value when the overall quality of profiles does not align with what the app advertises. I contacted customer service as a VIP user to share these concerns and requested a refund. While they were polite, they stated that refunds, credits, or VIP extensions are not offered under any circumstances due to policy. My feedback was repeatedly reframed as dissatisfaction with matches rather than addressing the core concern of profile vetting, moderation, and alignment between marketing and reality. I understand that no dating app can be perfect. However, when a platform heavily promotes intentionality, curation, and quality as its value proposition, users should reasonably expect to see that reflected in the experience. I would recommend this app only if you approach it as a standard dating app and use the free tier. VIP did not meaningfully deliver any type of elevated experience besides an unlimited amount of swipes.

Waitlist. I have been on the waitlist for this app to accept my profile for over 2 months and am now sick of waiting. It’s a joke and apparently understaffed for the tasks needed to be fulfilled

Disappointed!. I had high hopes for this app but unfortunately it’s just like the rest of the dating apps on the market. They charge for everything with very little to be desired! The prospects are the same even though they say that they review profiles for quality candidates. There are a ton of men with middle fingers up and going by the name of “Koochieeater29!” Oh not to mention profiles with just one or two bad pictures that were and no words that were “approved.” Seriously, you want us to pay to see that these weirdos like our profiles? A joke! Also, a few catfishing scammers have been spotted on this app so steer clear and don’t waste your time or money! Wait on God and enjoy your life at this point ladies!
