Meetup: Social Events & Groups

Worst app and website. When meetup started they were great, the website worked, then the app worked. The last few years, plainly, they suck. Their customer support is no better, just sending canned replies with suggestions that don’t fix the problem. Most groups I know have just migrated to FB groups. I think whomever is running Meetup know has stock options for FB, so they just keep running Meetup into the ground.

App Doesn’t Work. I browsed all groups in my area and the app says there’s no groups in any category. But on the website there are plenty of groups. Something is wrong with this app.

Not much here …. How is this rated 4.5+ with mostly negative reviews for at least a year? Worsening Paywalls, increasingly common group subscriptions, bad ui, weak search. Had some promise when emerging from the pandemic. I’m a single 30-something that doesn’t drink socially, and also does not work 9-5. Within half an hour, it’s socially dominated by young families, 55+, and heavy drinkers. Driving over an hour to meet with people I don’t know to do stuff I don’t really want to do is unappealing. Worse, some groups disallow dating between members (discriminatory to demiromantics and related). Weird, can’t stop the search from showing women only, single by choice, and lesbian groups. Only group I look at regularly now is almost half an hour away, and don’t need this app to keep up with them…

Made the right choice. Deleted this garbage app in mid March and given the recent reviews I made the right choice. Why anyone would pay money for it is insane.

not everything should be a subscription. like why would we be paying to advertise events that’s so stupid no one uses the apps anymore and have moved on to discord this is so sad

Corrupted company with wortying conflict of interests , automated bans. Retaliation, automated bans, zero human review this is a dangerous platform Review: Meetup is running a moderation system that punishes the user who reports violations instead of the user who commits them. I reported a clear Terms of Service violation, exactly as their own policy instructs users to do. Instead of investigating, they blocked my account and fabricated the accusation that I “abused reporting features.” No examples, no timestamps, no evidence, just nothing. This is retaliation, pure and simple. And it gets worse. When they blocked my original account, they also disabled the only official channel to contact support. So I used a second account ONLY to communicate with them. I didn’t join groups, didn’t attend events, didn’t message anyone, but I used it strictly to talk to support because they shut down the official channel. Their response? They blocked the second account too, claiming “multiple accounts to circumvent a ban,” even though the only thing I did was reply to their own ticket. This is the definition of a platform that prefers to eliminate the problem instead of doing the work required by their own policies. Their own policy says users should report misconduct. I did. They retaliated. Twice. Every reply I received was automated. No human review. No investigation. No transparency. No accountability. Just a bot repeating the same template while ignoring the evidence directly in front of them. This violates multiple App Store guidelines and specifically: 1) unfair treatment of users 2) abusive account termination 3) retaliation for reporting misconduct 4) lack of human review in moderation 5) Failure to provide a functional support channel Meetup is not enforcing safety BUT punishing the people who try to keep the platform safe. This is a dangerous and irresponsible moderation model, and Apple should review the developer’s practices immediately.

It keeps showing a city I don’t live in.. Can’t pick location

Im not gay. There is an option to rate app easily accessed but I can’t seem to find a way to tell this app that I’m not looking for other men in dating meetups. Also, I don’t know when it switched but it did on its own. I try to search “Straight” meet ups or dating woman, it bring the gay meet ups again. What a useless app. On another note, billions of humans on this planet and we need an app to meet each other?

Always trying to trick you!. This app sucks. Horrible. It is always trying to trick you into signing up for a pay version!! Awful!

Too Expensive Now, Poor Design. They want $44 minimum a month to start a group. and $10/week to become a "premium member" just so you can get on a waitlist and see who else is going. You cant delete a group once you create one, and you cant delete your account until you transfer ownership of a group you started. dont waste your time. complete reckless greed.

No guidance No instructions No help. There’s no one that monitors this app that offers help on how to use the app There are no instructions on how to join a group It’s like a club where everyone in it already knows how it works and if you don’t know how it works, then they don’t want you

Sneaky Charges. CHARGE TF out of you without giving you an advanced warning. GOOD LUCK meeting nothing but DUDES at these meetups anyway

Improvements? Nope! Bye bye. 👋. Every new version says “under the hood improvements” to make things run smoother. Nowhere does it say “moving previously free features behind a paywall” that will cost $4.99 a week to get back. Improvements to your bottom line, maybe, but not improvements for the user. Updated Jun 15, 2026: Bye bye Meetup. You took away functionality, then started hounding me for money to join. $9.99 per WEEK⁉️ Are you nuts! For ONE group that I belong to? Now I can’t RSVP without a donation or comment. Here’s my comment… Account deleted. App deleted.

Scam. Do not try the free trial they’ll charge you anyway as soon as you start the trial

I CAN’T LOG IN WITH MY ACCOUNT CREDENTIALS!. After the last automatic update the app logged me out (on my iPad - it still works fine on my phone). And it won’t allow me to use my account credentials to log back in. Wanna know why? Because the damn keyboard isn’t there! I can’t type in my email address and password! Please fix this - it’s a stupid problem to have. Sidebar: $9.99 A WEEK or $40/$50 A MONTH is too much! What exactly is the value? You have to pay to see the people who’ve signed up for an event you’re attending? Bananas! I can’t see myself using this platform much longer.

Stalling lots. Can’t use it, timing out and waiting for page

Pop Up Insanity. The money push on this app is insane. The amount of pop up adds and intentional misleading to pay for the plus membership makes this unusable.

Font size is too small. Please fix the app so it responds to the Per-App settings in Settings -> Accessibility. The font is too small and impossible to read for anyone over 45.

Lost their mind. I remember the Meetup website and I thought it world be fun to try it again. I saw $9.99 a WEEK and I deleted the app before even trying it. I’d be in the fence at $9.99 a year. They’re so far removed from what the value is. They’re not in the same universe What’s funny is that the last 20 or so reviews are all terrible but when you research the app the default is most relevant which only shows positive reviews.

Popups!. I wanted to try and find some people to go hiking and backpacking with. From the first time I opened the app and to the point I uninstalled it, it seems every click has a popup wanting me to pay. Also, blocking the attendee list behind a paywall is a serious concern.

All change is not good. There’s been too many changes in the past year. Added the organizer app and then canceled it. Things are not working correctly in current app. We’ve been using the app for years and now it’s probably my time to look for a replacement. Very disappointed in the updates and changes made not for the better.

Doesn’t verify email. When I click the email link sent to my email I just get a message that says “verify_member_blocked”. The help/support is not of any help so while the app sounds like it might be good if it won’t let me signup it’s definitely a 1 ⭐️app at this point.

Unorganized and relentless for wanting too much money for people who can’t afford it.. Plus you have me listed twice with the same name and different photos. Please fix this issue.

Terrible platform. I was flag for sending message to people on how they felt about particular group they are in? There was nothing sexual or no pics. This the worst friend app I ever use. Also you have to pay a subscription to access membership. It all about get you to pay. They do have a one week free membership but I am glad I cancel membership.

Spammy App. App used to be great! But unfortunately it has turned into a very aggressive spammy app. It is very annoying to keep on rejecting the subscription offer every single time.

Subscription needed to use. Very disappointing this app use to be free to use now you have to subscribe to use. It’s not ever advertised as a subscription required application either so be aware.

Gone Downhill!. Most of the groups are for profit businesses; and individual subscriptions are too expensive.

Ridiculously annoying UI. What sucks is that my group does not have an alternative. We are deeply rooted on this dumb app and doesn’t make sense to change.

What!?. I’m 13, the age limit says 13+ correct? But when I put in my date of birth it said I needed to be 18+, why? WHY? I NEED FRIENDS IN MY AREA AND ALL MY REAL LIFE FRIENDS LIVE FURTHER AWAY. Thanks a lot, now I have nothing to do all summer.

So many bugs in UI, how?. This app has so many glitches and bugs in the UI, I can’t imagine how someone looked at that and said “yes, that looks good. Ship it“ so many basic operations either don’t work or leave you trapped in a screen you can’t get out of. The list of your groups is entirely useless, never showing relevant events happening when a simple search will yield them. For what they charge organizers, they really should be doing a better job!

Nickel and dimes everything. Greedy app and terrible UX

So pushy!!!. Meetup has turned into a hot mess! Who wants to pay to sign up for free events. The constant pay me is annoying. Looking for alternatives.

Total garbage. Used to be such a great app but now it’s money money money. And it’s just garbage.,

Cannot log in. The app logged me out randomly a couple of days ago, and I’m unable to log back in since. On the log in page the “Log in” button remains disabled no matter what I do. Get help link leads to nowhere, there are no support forms or contacts whatsoever.

Scam. Charged me twice for same period and device over multiple weeks

Feel Scammed. I signed up for the free trial and found that there wasn’t much in my area for me. Either I was too old for groups, too young, or the groups I was able to join didn’t have any events happening for months. I cancelled the membership, but apparently I was a few hours too late, I had already been charged for the full year. No problem, I’d just call and request a cancellation and refund, after all, it’s was a matter of like 3 hours. Apple denied my refund request despite Meetup having a 60 day refund window for annual accounts. This was hours. I appealed, Apple denied again. I reached out to Meetup, they said because I paid via Apple, they could do nothing, regardless of their own policy. Both companies said my only option is to dispute with my bank, however Apple that if I did dispute with my bank, they would lock my account. So now I am out nearly $200 for an app I cannot use, and have to go through the hassle of disputing the charge with my bank and hoping that my bank can get my money back, then disputing my locked account with Apple to be able to get my devices functional again. definitely not worth all the trouble for an app that had nothing to offer me.

Barely usable due to ads. Accidentally touch any part of the app’s events scroll except the squares of the individual events and you will be launched into the App Store or who knows where for who knows what. Makes it almost impossible to get through the events you have filtered and are actually interested in. I don’t mind seeing ads but it’s a drag to be trap-doored out of the app every 1-2 minutes. Guess I’ll look for an alternative …
